replacement air filters

iv been looking at a couple of replacement air filters like the K&N ones, iv not had much luck finding any threads to say whether the replacement filters actually increase the induction noise?

has anyone on here replaced their filter? any improvement to the engine noise? any recommendations?

i have fitted a kn one to my 2.2 two years ago, more miles to the gallon great noise i think it goes faster but make sure you fit it propley or you will get the engine management light comeing on taking in to much air

There are several threads on them.

I've run one for about 3 years and not a jot of difference in induction noise or performance over standard. In fact I keep promising to swap it out for a decent paper one to avoid the need to clean and oil it.

Some reports indicate that they allow more particles into the engine and do more damage, but of course K&N woudl dispute that

I've always gone for ITG in my cars and have one in the M. I think it gives it a more aggressive induction noise. Won't make any difference to power I suspect.

Iv found various threads on all sorts of forums claiming they have massive power gains loads of noise and are amazing, then contradicting threads saying they let too much dirt in, offer no Bhp gains, and the oil clogs the intake so to avoid them - then another thread said that the oil affecting the engine was an urban mith!

I run the KN in my 3.0i and I can't tell any difference. I'm looking at going back to paper - I think they do a better job. I get a little irritated when buying the cleaning kit and oil for the KN. Just my personal opinion.

I bought a K&N panel filter and put it in my 3.0, and I cannot tell any difference whatsoever, noise or power. I think I will go for another option when it comes time to oil it.

I think I might go back to paper or try the carbon AFE intake, now that should give a nice induction sound.

why risk bugereing up your engine then? :?

Fitted filter this morning - definitely feels like car breathing easier but probably most of that due to old filter being rather dirty.

I cant really tell a difference in the sound, but overall pleased and together with my chip tune next week i'm sure the next dyno test will show gains.

mmmmmm ok, think the money would be better spent on an induction kit to get the induction noise!

For £45ish quid i bought a BMC universal twin cone from here http://www.bmcairfilters.com/twin-air-filter_prd_pr685_3_3.aspx just chose the size i wanted and made a heat shield out of sheet ally:

Edit: In seeing the post below, the induction system i've used makes no power / speed difference, it just sounds sweet!

Perfect ways to lose the ram air intake benefits.

So, questionable sound benefit and improvements in engine performance.


I'd look to the exhaust for sound/power improvements... chances are you will gain in both, rather than gain in one and lose in the other as per intake tinkering!


I'm happy to test intakes out wrt power improvements, but I guess no manufacturer will want an independent test conducting for obvious reasons... and I'm not willing to speculatively spend any money when I'm pretty sure of the outcome (ie, waste of money!)

well after only wanting to spend around £50 on a new air filter to get a little bit more noise iv booked the zed in this weekend to have an exhaust fitted!!

thanks for your advice - i think deep down i knew id get an exhaust i just wanted to satisfy the urge with a less costly mod!

cant wait till saturday!
