Replaced Parts

How many people on here either ask to see the parts that have been replaced or have been shown the replaced parts without prompting? I am only asking because prior to putting my car away for the winter I was told by my local Indy that I needed a few jobs doing on my 2004 2.5i E85 One of the jobs being to replace the "Broken" O/S rear spring. Now having studied this forum over the winter months I decided to tackle the job myself. I bought a low profile Jack, a Torque Wrench and some Jack stands and a new set of springs. Over the weekend I decided to tackle the job and you can imagine my surprise when the Springs I took off were fine, no sign of rust, no cracks and certainly no breakage.

Now I know we all moan about the springs going and we have the famous list, but how many are actually broken or just a figment of garages imagination???
 
They do break.

I've had two Z4's and two springs break.

Other than that I would assume you mean dodgy garages charging for work not required. Yes I would check the parts removed / replaced.
 
Not sayin g you are wrong RE the spring but many times the break is only the very tip of the spring , the pig,s tail part meaning the spring actually looks ok :?
 
You could be right there Mr Wilks, if it is that difficult to tell, I have replaced the pair any way, just to be on the safe side and replaced the rubbers top and bottom

Its a weak spot on them that very often breaks after the car has been jacked + lowered
Sometimes the part that breaks off can rattle around but even if not there you should be able to see a break
 
I have had broken rear springs on all three BMWs I have owned previous to my Zed and on my wifes last car, a 2008 Zafira. Looks like it's only a matter of time for the Zed ! :(
