Replaced my Runflats

Hi Folks, so i took the leap and replaced all 4 run flat tyres on my 2.5 Z4 yesterday to normal reinforced tyres, i had 2 balding tyres and one puncture so thought just do it. Never thought i would really notice the different but wow, the ride is so much more forgiving.

Pirelli P Zero's

Anyway im a bit of a Sunday driver so take from that what you will but hope this helps.

Simon.

Glad you're happy with 'em....I like my fillings to rattle when I drive over a crisp packet!!

Don't get it - it's a sports car, why convert it to an Austin Allegro (google may be required :) )
Each to their own I guess, glad you like them

When you drop runflats you don't lose any of the handing ability of the car. You just gain grip, comfort and less noise.

Sorry you've softened the suspension - handling must be affected
You gain comfort, I will agree with you there

I put on non-rft, the handling improved a lot, like not trying to wander into oncoming traffic!
Something else i did was to replace the rear std shocks.
Then the little traction control light stopped flashing on light gravel.

Fitting non RFT's doesn't change the suspension, I mean how could it :poke:

Non RFT's have a less stiff sidewall (as in they won't keep the tyre shape without air) so yes your handling will be subtly different, however there is an easy fix....just increase the tyre pressures by a small amount until you are happy (not to much mind as you will get uneven tyre wear).

Also a car with 19" RFT's will handle differently than the same car with 17" RFT's

The tyres are part of the suspension - in fact in F1 most of the suspension travel is in the tyre sidewall
So unless you do what you say and increase the pressure, there will be side wall flex laterally and vertically

Not knocking anybodies choices - let I said, each to their own
I'm happy with the RF's -

Okay I'm being semantic, but the tyres are not classified as part of the suspension system, but I know I'm not going to convince you......

suspension travel refers to how much the hub can move relative to the car, what you mean is how much the car can move relative to the ground, and yes in F1 tyre pressures are adjusted to improve handling and that's where I started

I understood that BMW tuned the suspension to take account of the run flats

I'm sure if that were the case the suspension would be softer. I can't imagine BMW testing the cars with runflat tyres and sports suspension and thinking it was suitable for road use!

I think that quote is something sales people use to make sure customers come back and pay them large sums of money for replacement runflat tyres.

Porsche Boxter and Honda S2000 are also sports cars but they don't crash and shudder over road imperfections as our 2014 Z4, with re-tuned suspension, does.
Will be ditching the RFs as soon as a bit more tread is scrubbed off them.
Guess I shouldn't have bought the M Sport with 19s, but that was the one with the big discount.

I never minded runflats on the Zed as I preferred the safety aspect over a slightly improved ride of non runflats, having said that I specced the adaptive suspension and non runflats on the M135i and the car is a joy to drive in comparision, I'm never on the look out for pot holes and trying to dodge them as I was before which was tiresome. It would have to be adaptive suspension on the Zed if I ever had another.

two 19" alloys cracked - junked the run flats and put on decent tyres. much nicer to drive. and not so phobic about pot holes....

Sorry yes 23i, told you i was a sunday driver and yes of course, the more adventurous drivers would appreciate the bumps and dynamic handling I guess. I used to tramline a lot and gripped onto the steering wheel a bit harder, just takes that edge off I think.

Each to their own but suits me and will now keep the car.
