Replace one or both rear tyres

One of the rear tyres on the Z has now flashed up a second low pressure warning, indicting that there really is a problem with the tyre and not a glitch in the system.

With around 8k miles covered the rears will will be 1/3 worn (last time I checked the tread depth was 6.5/7mm and the minimum depth I will run to is 3mm). Should I bite the bullet and get both rears replaced to keep the tread levels the same. The part worn tyre could always be kept as a 'spare' (although I have a few old tyres like that for cars that are now long gone)?

I'd take your Zed to a tyre fitter and explain your problem - they may be able to check the tyre for you - there may be a fix available?

I agree take it in and get someone to check it ,in my case it was a cracked alloy wheel that triggered the low pressure warning .

I was in the same position about 2 months ago.A nail was found to be the problem pressure would drop over a 4 week period.Repair was £18 including a wheel balance,far cheaper than a new tyre.

Thanks for your ideas. After a weekend of not moving, not needing to move, the rear had dropped to zero pressure. Car has been taken over to the BMW dealer and for us (with wheel and tyre insurance) the worst outcome is that the tyre will need replacing, which would leave the car with unmatched tread depths on the rear. Hence my question. Or more directly, what is the maximum difference in tread depth that anyone would accept across an axle?

Personally on a performance car i like to keep the tyres the same brand and simular age /wear .And would change in pairs.
I guess it boils down to money .My car is a toy/hobby for me so i dont scrimp on things.

Due to a unrepairable puncture on one rear i changed both pirelli p zeros at £230 each .

+1, had to replace both mich PSS due to a bolt in in one, they were just half worn I just don't think it is worth it if you drive enthusiastically, hit a freak bit of standing water when accelerating ...

if it cant be fixed, do both. keep the good one as a spare or flog it on ebay.

Hmm, that's why a repair is worth considering (as I was told a good repair will outlive the life of the tyre- anyone confirm this?)

If not possible, I too prefer tyres which match in terms of tread depth, despite the cost, due to driving style and performance available.

You cant make the decision until you find out whats wrong.
Get the wheel off and see if you can find out whats wrong whether its the tyre or the wheel.
Have you driven on the tyre that has lost the air while it had no air in it?
This might mean the tyre is goosed anyway.
But if its a puncture, get it fixed if its possible.
If its the wheel cracked, get it fixed or replace the wheel. You dont need to replace the tyre.
If its a puncture that cannot be fixed for whatever reason , then decide whether to replace both tyres.

Sound advice from Nictrix. That's what I would do.

If the tyre does need replacing then I would get 2 for the reasons stated in earlier posts.

2 tyres bought, but it only cost £270 for the pair. And we have a part-worn spare joining its companions in the garage loft. I need to start keeping a log of what is up in the garage loft.

Six years is the lifespan then chuck them out I'm told - no matter what the tread depth!
So if you do low miles / year you may as well drive it like you stole it! :rofl:

Yes I just dumped a set of Bridgestone RFT with 4-6 mm tread but as they were close to 6 years figured it was best ,probably could have sold them on e bay but not sure I would be comfortable.
