Repairing / replacing windscreens

Following on from my recent Grand Tour, tail gating some E85s and E89s on the northern part of the NC500 route which had long stretches that had been resurfaced resulted in one small crack and about 15 chips in the windscreen.

Insured with LV I called Autoglass for a request on what to do resulted in sending them some high res pictures of the crack and their decision to attempt to repair it.

The chap repaired it today…a sophisticated version of injecting cyanoacrylate resin into the crack. Took about 30 minutes.

I had to pay a £20 excess for this crack repair.

Interesting parts of this process were..

LV specifies an excess of £190 for replacement E89 wind screens. Much higher than for some arguably more complex windscreens.

The process that Auto Windscreens uses for the crack repair runs the risk of making the crack worse so had to accept a disclaimer to the effect that the repair process may precipitate the need for a new screen.

Chap said that new screens are identical and from the same supplier save that cars 3 years and younger get a BMW branded version.

He said he couldn’t do anything about all the small chips ..had hoped for a patchwork of repairs.

Means the excess on a windscreen is as much as the annual insurance…

Bargain! Much cheaper than you having to pay dealer-price for a new BMW screen.

That’s true..but..about 2 years ago when I had the 20i and had its screen replaced the excess was £75….

They saw you coming Pete! :D

Our E89 is insured with LV. £95 windscreen replacement excess, £20 repair excess. Yes I did check! :)

I fear that your replacement 2 years ago has caused the increase. You claim, you pay more. It's how insurance works.

So you’re saying that the increased excess is a personal loading due to a previous claim?

I had a saga with Autoglass windshields, rubbish Chinese screens.
Ended paying extra £300 to have a BMW screen fitted on the third attempt.

I was aware of your posts..hence my post..I raised the question with the chap from several angles, he was empathetic that the BMW branded one and the no brand were from the same manufacturer…

I know your experience was different…

However on other parts I’ve found repeatedly that the BMW part was simply the OE part with BMW printing..

I’ve just checked the replacement windscreen for its BMW logo which is missing that was fitted to my 20i was a no name version and worked perfectly…..

No idea.
My excess is £95, yours is £190 (exactly double?) from the same insurer for the same windscreen. You have claimed for a new windscreen fairly recently; I haven't. Draw your own conclusions.

I have a neighbour who keeps paying massive premiums for his car insurance (relatively). When we looked into why, it was because he has a history of replacement windscreens. No other reason for it.

So the following excess windscreen charges apply to all these vehicles in my name this year..all with LV..

Mini Cooper SD £95
Jeep Wrangler TJ £140
Volvo XC70 £140
BMW Z4 20i £190
BMW Z4 35is £190

I only have 3:

BMW 440i £85 (not with LV)
BMW Z4 E89 £95 (LV)
Mazda 3 £80 (LV)

No windscreen claims in the last 20 + years.

Turns out my excess was £190 back in February 2018 on the 20i before I ever had a claim... :tumbleweed:

resurrecting this thread as I have just got a crack in my windscreen. How did you guarantee you got a BMW screen? I'm about to call my insurer, but I suspect I will not get an original BMW one - they will make a contribution if I want to get it from somewhere else, but it would help to know much it might cost if I can before I speak to them. I certainly don't want anything inferior.. My local stealer said they dont do it...

thanks!
