Repair work quote

Hi guys,

Took the z in for a bit of work to do with a knocking from the front drivers side.

I've been told the car requires the following:

2x Shock absorbers
2x top struts
Anti Roll bar
Anti Roll bar bushes.

Been quoted £700 + VAT for parts and labour.

Does this sound reasonable? Seemed expensive to me.

Cheers

Sounds very expensive, nothing there is hard to change and I am 100% sure parts could be sourced for half of that.

When are you based? happy to help wave a spanner if you are not one for DIY

A new Anti-roll bar? Did you hit something :|

ARB Bushes are about £5 each, top mounts £15. You can get a B12 kit with 4 springs and 4 shocks for £600...

OP.............you don't mention whether this is at a Main Dealer where you obviously won't be paying ebay prices for parts, and labour will probably be £100+ an hour.

Not a main dealer, just a local independent specialist.

I've not hit anything, the car has developed a knocking which has gotten progressively worse.

On inspection the ARB where it connects to the bushes has been bodged the one side using tape...

I have had a quote from elsewhere asking for the same parts and had the following:

dampers £98x2
top struts. £45x 2
arb links £22 x2
ARB bushes £16

Total £679.20 inc vat and labour. Will call the original place now and get a breakdown of prices.

I'm in Herefordshire but thanks for the offer!

Try a dealer as well, sometimes they can surprise you with the costs with the 4+ scheme.

The ARB is just a solid bar, unless damaged though an accident it should not need replacing

The second quote is better as it does not include a new bar, but adds in drop links.
Overall it sounds like folks are not identifying the cause, just swapping out everything. The knocking is one of the areas being replaced, not all of them.

Still at £700 I'd be sourcing and fitting that lot myself in a few hours

Why not upgrade the arbs and get uprated suspension all round :D

The parts will cost the same and all the work you can do yourself.

Nothing listed can go horribly wrong

You know I am almost tempted.

We're on a farm so have plenty of tools about, and I have a nice big garage/shed I can work in.

The only problem is I have never really taken a spanner to a car at all except for the most simple of things. Also we are working flat out this time of year so might not have a chance to look at it for a month or 2.

I like to think I can follow instructions but it never seems that simple!

Anyway the first garage came back with an itemized quote, I am thinking they have used original parts while the cheaper has used aftermarket.

They have quoted me the following with is minus VAT so need to add 20%

Suspension Top Mounting x2 £73.86
Suspension Strut x2 £200.32
Anti Roll Bar x1 £125.84
Roll bar bushes x2 £9.50
Labour £252.90

Total inc VAT £794.90

You really shouldn't be needing a roll bar. These are seriously hard to damage. If you've got knocking it could be the front wishbone trailing arm bush. You can definitely do this yourself too and by doing it yourself the extra money you save can be spent on better aftermarket parts. Win win.

For a garage I'd expect them to do that amount of work - minus the new ARB in 2 hours. You can do it all yourself if you can lift the front and get the wheels off. Parts in the last quote are a little more than I'd expect to pay all in, so they're adding 20% mark up to them. £250 is 4/5 hours labour - not quick enough in my mind.
