Repainting steering wheel trim

Any advice?

My wheel trim has seen better days and needs repainting I feel. Has anyone done this and has any advice regarding method or, primarily, paint.

Been looking at the Rust-Oleum direct to plastic options but unsure as to their durability. I want something that will last, but a Matt finish so no lacquer.

Any helpful pointers?

Aha, the only thing is I've heard plastidip doesn't last well when you're constantly in contact with it, so would wear down pretty fast on the spokes. I may well however give it a try with some acrylic satin black paint.

I can testify to the unsuitability of plastidip / Plastikote - as mentioned it wears and smudges due contact.

I did this recently. Halfords Matt black spray I used. 3 or 4 coats followed by Halfords Matt Lacquer. They look amazing ..

If you are removing for the first time, you will probably snap at least one of the screw bosses on the front plate of the wheel. I broke all mine but they still hold. I used a Halfords plastic primer. When I sprayed it over the original silver paint, both just wiped off to leave clean plastic. Primed and painted with mat black, looked spot on. That was over a year ago and still looks good.
By the way, you may want to look at “mewant” steering wheel covers to fit while you have your plastics off.

Did mine a couple of weeks ago. But have ordered some soft touch rust-oleum Matt black to try and get a more OE look

Cheers all for the images, I have to say these look like new trim firebobby! Any chance you could let me know what paints you used? Seems halfords paints are pretty well regarded and they do a satin black, any clear coat on top and if not, how is the paint holding up?

I need to go to my workshop to look at the make of paint, I got it off ebay if I remember rightly. There is no signs of wear on them at all.

No worries, I'm sure any decent paint will work. No lacquer coat then? I know I can get a satin lacquer spray so debating the use of it

Without a top coat it'll be prone to scratching off easily

No, just a couple of top coats

Well I started this yesterday. Not done much yet, just sanded all the parts down with 600 grit and applied 3 coats of plastic primer to the first parts. Was getting a bit late to start the rest so will probably do the other primer coats tonight.

The plan then is a few coats of satin black paint, followed by a couple of coats of satin lacquer. Should do nicely!
