Remus back boxes

BMWZ4MC

Lifer!
 Diving out of the sun
I've now had the opportunity to test my Remus back boxes. The main reason I bought them was that I find the large OEM back boxes hanging below the rear bumper somewhat ugly. Also, my original pipes were a little corroded and I don't have the time or the Dremel to sort that out!

I didn't really want anything louder than stock for the sake of my neighbours as well as needing to meet noise restrictions at track days. At the same time I really didn't want to drown out the rasp of S54 engine or lose the pops and crackles on the overrun. I like the look of the RPI pipes, but they are seriously loud and prone to drone at motorway speeds (or so I'm led to believe). I was seriously tempted by IK's Supersprints, but decided that they just wouldn't work on several thousand mile road trips around Europe. I'd read about the Remus pipes being like stock but more purposeful, and spent ages comparing exhaust sounds on You Tube (sad I know), but really couldn't get a feel for how they would sound on the car. In the end I bought Mr Fish's for a good price and in great condition thinking that I could always sell them on if they weren't for me...

Suffice it to say they sound great :D A little louder than stock, but not aggressively so, and a little bassier without losing the S54 rasp. As Markos says, they sound so much better than stock on cold start up. Below 3500 rpm the sound is like a deeper version of stock, and above about 5500 rpm induction roar progressively overwhelms the exhaust sound (which is definitely the way it should be). Between 3500 and 5500 rpm the sound is amazing and truly addictive. There is a transition from a deep rumble through to a throaty wail before the screaming insanity beyond this range. It's enough to raise the hairs on the back of the neck... Best of all, the pops and crackles on the overrun are still there in abundance, even more so than with stock.

As for the appearance, the back boxes present a much smaller profile than stock and are painted black so they hide well behind them bumper with just the pipes exposed. The tips themselves are slightly larger than stock and have "Remus" embossed fairly discreetly. I think they weigh about the same as stock.

The only slight negatives are that the sub 3500 rpm bass sound can be a little wearing in stop-start traffic when trying to drive gently (although there's no motorway drone at all), and that the tail pipes look after market (I don't want to be perceived as being a chav  ). Over all, I'm very pleased, and for what I paid I certainly should be :driving: :D

When I have time to give the car a wash, I'll post some pics and, when I can, some sound bites

Lastly, I also had the CDV removed, and it does make a difference, but that's another story :P

Glad you like the Remus, everytime I see some advertised I think shall I/shan't I, a good write up so maybe next time I will!! :D

torn between remus or AFE intake for a bit more drama. Certainly don't want drone or excessively loud. I know what you mean about listening to clips on youtube - doesnt represent in vivo sound (but is addictive)

glad you are happy, and look forward to some gratuitous pictures

If the price is right, give them a try - I don't think you'll regret it :D Even insurance wasn't a problem - just a small admin charge

I agree completely about Remus vs AFe as I was torn too, and the risk of drone / excessive volume were the biggest worries for me when looking at exhaust mods. Especially since induction noise is not measured for sound checks at track days, just exhaust.
The only thing that worries me about changing the intake is the risk of upsetting the MAF. I certainly don't want an oiled filter...
I was after the AFE intake that was for sale (twice) on here recently, but I missed it both times. Actually, I think I'll probably end up with the AFE too in the end anyway, but I'm trying to spread out the mods so I can enjoy the one at a time instead of all hell breaking loose in one go

Glad they have gone on easily and you are happy with them. Cheers James

Hi Mr Fish! Thanks for your offer of advice with fitting. I ended up getting my indy to do it whilst the car was in for a few other things (pads, CDV removal etc) as I have no time and more importantly no lift. As you can see from the above, I'm really pleased. Would you agree with my summary? Hope you're not missing them too much :D

at that price you should be really happy, really nice to grab a bargain...... the rpi is absurdly loud in every single sense, definatly not for a DD.... ga41 is my hero for putting up with that everyday......

can you post some pics?? interestingly i believe remus make the AC schnitzer exhaust for them....

I'll try to get some pics at the weekend, but I'll need to clean it first  Work and revision are keeping me busy at the moment...

Ah...yes! Work-avoidance is a wonderfiul thing...if only I could sneak out for a drive too!

Nice write up BMWZ4MC, I think the above sums them up perfectly

I too bought mine used and at that sort of price they're a fantastic addition, even if you don't factor in selling them on when (I mean if :D ) you sell the car!

If the weather is even vaguely OK at the weekend I'll try and wash the car and take some pics/videos too :)

how was the fitment with the remus exhaust OP??? soooo many aftermarket exhausts fit like crap and hang way to low...... from the remus systems ive seen they sit up nice and high..... any info on this??

They look great, my mechanic has done a good job of getting them symmetrical too
