Removing the gear knob

I've swapped them on two Z4s and two 3 Series without a problem. :)

Although a former Roadster owner managed to break his windscreen. :o

Put the car up on a lift.
Drop both windows.
Pass a scaffold bar through.
Loop a rope round under the base of the knob and tie it to the scaffold bar.
Place an acro prop under each end of the scaffold bar to prevent it moving.
Lower the lift.

No need to thank me. 8)

I’d love to see a pic of a Zed suspended from its gearknob hanging a few inches above a lift

There must be a better way of doing this. Can't you somehow drive a wedge between the knob and the tranmission tunnel and get it off that way?

With plenty of padding and somehow preventing it slipping out from under the knob, it may be conceivable to use a scissor jack if all else fails?

I’m sure someone on here had to hacksaw/dremel off the old one as it’d been properly glued on not just slotted on.

Might be time to sacrifice the original ?

I did mine two nights ago semi terrified after all the stories I've heard over the years. Minus one TV review where the thing came off during normal driving.

Wasn't as hard as people make out. But sustained strong force isn't the best way I found. Short sharp tugs worked best with your jaw nowhere near the firing line.
I was just a little worried about the light cables but they had plenty of play and length.
