Removing Runflat tyres?

Hi All,

Apologies if this has been mentioned before..

As some of you may alreay know I am looking to upgrade my alloy wheels from the standard 16's to some 18's.. I currently have the runflats, however after reading lots of other posts on here it seams that most people recommend going for normal tyres..

I understand the reasons why, but can I ask what would you do in an emergency i.e puncture? When I upgraded to 17's on my previous car I purchased a spare wheel (but I also had space for that wheel in the boot)

Just something i need to consider before jumping into purchasing new wheels :)

Any help would be much appreciated.. thanks in advance

I think if u get a puncture repair kit?
Isnt that just as legal as having a spare wheel?

Does that make it totally legal to not have a spare then yehh?

There is no issue with legality as you aren't required by law to carry a spare at all. Not having a spare isn't illegal, and having a spare tyre isn't even an MOT requirement.

Carry the tyre weld for peace of mind in case you get a flat, and think of it as a temp solution to get to a garage rather than a permanent fix.

Dave is right. You don't need a spare at all; however if you DO have one, I believe you can fail your MOT if the tyre is illegal.

Most people are using Holts. It's about £6 in Asda. Buy 2.

You're spot on re the spare. No requirement to carry but if you do it must be legal. As an aside yo ucan and will be stoped and fined for exceeding the speed rating, usually 50mph on them too. Seen it all to often on the motorway

There are actually 3 choices for the flat problem:
The Holts tyreweld as mentioned.

The BMW mobility kit that is used on the Z4M that does not have a spare. Its a powerful pump and go and imho way better than the aerosol. They are cheap enough on Ebay, fit in the boot corner and double as a decent compressor.

Third is an E46 or similar 16" runflat. Sort of the belts and braces approach. I keep one in the garage and drop it in the boot for longer runs as I did out in Wales last weekend. Carry a cheap brace and scissor jack for roadside changes.

Frankly I'd go mobility kit and then of course you'll have RAC or AA as a fallback

AA is one of those recovery team people that we should have in case we get stuck on a motorway right?

You got it AA - Automobile Association. There are also RAC (which I prefer and use), Green Flag and several smaller recovery groups and insurance company schemes.

Services go from roadside repair, through various levels to towing to a garage, home start, completion of journey, etc. You can also do it for the person, so it covers any car they are in or the car, for any person driving it.

What's the general price for a mobility kit? As said, Holts is £6 each; so I'm wondering how it compares. Can you explain it a bit more for me?

yup, in the same respect as front fogs and rear wipers, by law your car doesn't require them but if they are fitted they must be in working order and legal.

Thanks for the replies all :)

Just wanted to know what you all thought about the sistuation and what you done.. that stuff on ebay looks pretty good and quite reasonable too!

The ride will improve if you remove the run flats, and they are quite loud (road noise wise).

The Holts stuff in my link are 400ml cans, they say 400ml is required to do a single tyre but I'd be inclined to carry two just in case (it's no weight or room to store two).

It's also common for people to carry a little 12V compressors (plug into the cigarette lighter), the Holts stuff says it has the pressure to fill a tyre but again the compressor offers peace of mind, they are very small and cheap too.

I have this compressor, just a 10 quid jobbie but it's served me well over the years -> clicky
