Removing rear discs?

Evening all

Today I changed my front pads, discs and calipers all went well

How do you get the rear discs off?

With the calipers, carriers, disc retaining bolt removed and hamd brake off it still feels as if the hand brake shoes are holding the disc in place

You can pull the disc foward half inch but it springs back

Thanks

It will be the slight lip on the inside of the drum that will be holding it on against the edge of the handbrake shoes.

Two usual methods I use (on many cars, last one a Volvo V70)

1. Slacken the the handbrake adjustment bar/cable right off. Usually below the handbrake lever (not needed to adjust on my z4 yet so others can help here)

2. When you have hold of the disc, try rotating and pulling at the same time to almost unscrew it off the brake shoes - as soon as you get one bit of the shoes past that lip you'll be able to get the rest off.

Don't pull too hard against the springs as you risk deforming the back plate where the brake shoes are attached to with the spring clips or breaking/snapping a retaining spring.

It will come, just keep wiggling it :P

You may well need new shoes as well after due to scoring etc.

It's worth doing a search of the forum for this as there are a few threads that also have useful links. As Itguy said you can loosen the rear brakes off at the handbrake, you can slacken the brakes with the shoe adjuster that is on the hub. With the wheel off, rotate the disc round until you can see a cog through one of the bolts. Is is pretty hard to see, I found in the end that I could actually access the cog by pull the disc toward me. Use a screwdriver to rotate the disc (inside to outside iirc) and this will retract brakes.

You will have re-adjust brakes when you have put the new discs on.

I had a bit of a struggle with my rear disks too...

finding the cog was a real nightmare.... but once found and a good squirt of WD40 it came off ok.

the only issue I had was the pad sensor was stuck in the pad, so had to break it and get a new one... only an extra 15 minutes work though, so not the end of the earth...

you could always go the 'Clarkson mallet' way and hammer them off.... ;)

One other thing to be wary of is that if you start being agressive with it (hammer etc) there is a chance you'll delaminate the brake shoe friction material from the steel backing plate. This isn't a problem apart from you'll be new shoes, but I expect you'll be fitting new anyway.

since you have some slack already - it will be related to the handbrake show as to why this is stuck on.

go with the above advice - pull and twist at the same time - use a hammer to prise it away and you will be fine

Thanks guys

So to slacken the hand brake is through one of the wheel bolt holes, its about 5 o'clock because I see it yesterday, what do you use? Screwdriver/allenkey???

5 o'clock seems a bit low from what I can remember... more 3 o'clock??

but yes, I used a thin, long flat screwdriver.... and I can never remember what way it turns.... :headbang:
