Removing coil pack question.

Was able to remove 4 of the 6 coil packs with no issues. However the two packs on either side of the valvetronic motor housing don’t seem to have enough room to pull out.

Do I need to remove the housing or just be a bit more aggressive with them?

The pack in question in the photo has the screwdriver through it.

Thanks.

I took all mine out without removing the valvetronic motor, so it is feasible. There was a bracket somewhere I took off/loosened to move, IIRC, but don't remember which it was (I think it was the flat one in the top of the picture.)

No help, but hopefully keeps you going!

My buddy and I took mine off last week. Didn't have to take off the valvetronic motor. Some of them took a bit of force to come out.

All the others came out fine, you did need to give them a good pull, but those other two look like they will need a bit more oomph to get out. The packs look like they have a bit of leeway. I can't imagine that to change the spark plugs requires putting the valvetronic motor into service mode etc

Brute force and stupidity! The rubber boots can often stick in the tube or round the plug top.

At least they're not VW ones like I did on a Skoda Fabia the other month. Pulled until the rubber was nearly twice its natural length before they came out. Working on other makes always makes me appreciate BMW more!

Took another go last night at removing these two packs. With a bit more grunt, they eventually came out.

I get where you are coming from TBH. I took the plugs out of a 22 year old M54 last night, that hadn't seen the light of day since 2001. I was a bit nervous about giving the coils the required 'yank'. Like you, they came out eventually!

One difference was that the engine was a bit warmer than when I tried again. Possibly that had something to do with it. However, I suspect it was more a case of force than anything.

I am getting it mechanically sorted first. New plugs, oil, brake fluid, brakes, air filter all to be done in the next week or so. Then we can start to rip it apart. :)

Chanlon1, glad to see you got your coil packs off! I also found these two harder to remove than the others - and one of them blocks the securing screw for the Valvetronic motor.

It might be best to remove the housing to make it easier. Being too aggressive could cause damage. Good luck!
The coil pack came out way easier than when I previously tried. Dont know if it was because the engine was slightly warm, or I just used a bit more elbow grease. However, I didn't have to rip it out, so there was no chance of damage.

Excellent news.....coils n plugs are my next job in a few weeks..
Just a thought.......perhaps you ate an extra wheetabix for breakfast?
