Removing bins behind seats - do they just pull out?

I've ordered the OEM subwoofer boxes from my dealer to mount some subs in:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BU52&mospid=49303&btnr=65_1218&hg=65&fg=20

Costs for this lot then - all prices excluding VAT:

OEM grilles £25.74 each
Soft boxes £6.75 each
Rubber grommet / sleeve for the bass reflex port £2.17 each
12 x blind rivet nuts and screws for fitting the covering plates £8.40

Total cost inc VAT £89.59.

Not included in the above are the covering plates which are about £10 - £15 per side. These have the OEM subwoofer holes cut out but I am fitting some Kenwood 6 x 9 subs so I didn't bother with these and will make new plates from MDF. These just screw to the metal boxes that are already in place behind the storage bins, and the soft boxes line these metal boxes for better acoustics I presume.

The Kenwood kit is £99.95 which is very good value and includes two 6 x 9 subs and a 200w mono amp.

Not sure how it will sound but I'm going to try and put it all in this weekend and let you know.

Cool, I have some Genesis 6x9 subs ready to go into mine. Not had time to install them yet. I bought some second hand storage boxes of ebay, which i'm going to use to hide the speakers. Going to br running the subs of a Genesis Profile Sub amp.

Originally wanted to use some Image Dynamics 8's I had spare, but they are just a little to big to fit into the storage box area.

Will be interested to see how you get on with your install.

If when you do it, your installation ends up looking a bit like this

you may find that you have cut off the 30mm deep shroud that mates with the OEM subs on the grills to allow them to fit without touching the speaker.

Yep, interested to hear the outcome too.

I'd always shied away from 6x9s though, aren't they a compromise? Or are these different because they're subwoofers only and not 2/3-ways?

glastoveteran, are you taking the signal from the OEM headunit or do you have an after-market headunit with RCA's?

I'm not sure whether 6 x 9 subs are considered inferior, but at the end of the day getting 2 subs and an amp for less than £100 means I'm not expecting any miracles! As I've read there is a distinct lack of 6" subs available so figured these were the easy option.

The supplied amp will either take an RCA level or speaker level input, so seeing as I'm planning on keeping the OEM head unit I'm just going to take the signal from the rear speakers.

Again that's probably not the way to get the best sound but I'm just going to experiment with it really. I've got a second hand cleansweep that I bought on ebay so that will probably end up in there as well but I'm just trying to do things in stages in case it's all a bit too ambitious for little old me!

Thanks. As you say, under £100 for the subs and amp is a bargain, quite tempted myself.

There's nothing wrong with the 6x9 shape. The problem is that they are come in the form of cheap coax speakers.

They have a larger cone surface than a 6" sub, with a decent motor should be good.

I've not read or heard anything about the Kenwood 6x9 subs, but the price seems good.
