There are a lot of people who 'lurk' for a long time before joining and contributing. All should remember this I think?

I think the point is that some people join the forum and the first and very often only post is a for sale ad. basically just using the forum as a free advertising medium and contributing nothing towards the forum.
Personally i find that annoying and a bit cheeky.
In Ballingtons case though I can see what he was trying to do by way of giving someone a chance of getting his car for a not bad price and he comes across as a thouroughly decent chap.
Removing his ad himself showed understanding and was a genuine act. well done M8

fair comment i suppose regarding people using it as free ad space. it is a bit cheeky i suppose.

Ok, at least Ballington is still around so not a one-off then. I will take my "no comment" back and "comment" instead :D

You better get your pictures up then ...

I agree, I am lurking...I don't have a Z4 yet, but I am looking for one. To that point I don't really have much to contribute when discussing Z4's but hope to when I do.

I find it bizarre sometimes that people get so protective about their forums (but I can understand the mentality - the pride that people take in contributing and therefore a need to protect what they have).....but at the same time, I would suspect that a lot of the traffic brought to this site is from people checking the classified sections. more traffic = more hits = a better position for the site owner for revenue streams = more money to invest in the site = a better site for the users. That may be incorrect - I do not work in digital, but a guess.

Also, diversity is good when it comes to opinions - in that sense more the merrier I say...but what do I know...I'm a Z4-less lurker!

You are coming from the other side though, a lurker is at the beginning of the Z process and wants to learn. Understood and the most normal way of getting to know a prospective car.

However, if someone has had a Z for say 4 years, and never had any interest in it to join a forum or discuss anything, or even just lurk and only joins to sell - that is the objection as it is no more then an autotrader advert or so. Normally, something is advertised and they never even bother posting back at all.

like i said it was a genuine mistake, looking at it retrospectively i can see that it must be quite annoying to have people coming and going just to sell their cars, however the forum seems like a cool place to be so i plan to hang around :) thanks to nosa and pvr for their kind words hope no hard feelings

Isn't it of value to forum members that might want to buy a Z4 to have them advertised here?
Admittedly, it's of even more value if the seller has been here longer and you can see from their history what the car's like and how they treat it.

I think the points now done to death but imho 'no' someone who just joins to place a free advert is of no benefit to anyone on the forum. Those cars are invariably already advertised on Ebay, Autotrader or piston heads and mostly just linked here to get a free advert. The mods spend a huge amount of time cleaning up spam from member who just join to sell iphones and the like and such ads are not far off that.

As a mod I never saw this advert and my post refelcted that however I'd be delighted if it were re-instated by ballington31 and he went on to be a member regular member.

That was nice and polite CJ, I can think of several un polite things to say :D

I will try and be polite too,,

These people who just join to sell are basically freeloading , their contribution to the site is zilch (that includes donations), then there is the possible thought, that someone here who has joined the site to get advice etc prior to buying, will think he is possibly buying a car from someone who is a member and a enthusiast who has has lovingly looked after his car and might give them some reassurance

EDIT; Bellington, its nice to see you getting activly involved, so I do take some of it back where you are concerned :P you might regret selling it now you know what a nice bunch of people we are :D
