Remove air intake deflector?

Folks -

I'm considering removing the small deflector from the intake piping in order to free up the path just a bit. See this part:

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part?id=BT93-USA-05-2006-E85-BMW-Z4_M32&mg=13&sg=20&diagId=13_1174&q=13717519243

My understanding is that this piece is used to keep water from entering the intake. However, RPI makes a Ram air type snout, so i cannot imagine there are that many scenarios where enough water would enter the intake to hydro lock things. Thoughts?

I would purchase and install a RPI snout, but I'm very skeptical that they work. Seems like you get most of the benefits by just removing the deflector. (flame away)

Anyone have a negative experience by removing the deflector?

What do you hope to gain? The hp increase would be minuscule (if any). BMW would know better than most what is required on the engine, all you might end up is an increase in intake noise, and by your own words you don't think the aftermarket one would work anyway.

Yeah. I don’t expect significant gains. But manufacturers like BMW have to design for all possible operating environments. So the deflector makes sense for extremely wet weather. I figured I could remove it without negative effects and might gain something. More take noise is also a welcome benefit.

Just throwing the idea out there…

If it's more intake noise you want, remove the foam plug from the sound generator connected to the intake manifold.

You can safely do that. In fact a member here used to produce his own ram air scoops with a much more open design.

Tons of people here, including myself, bought and fitted one. Never had any issue with it.

Just search “Dan air scoop”. The relevant topics will also contain pictures.
