Remote roof operation

Hi all

I have been looking for a local garage to program the key to open & close the roof. Well i found a little gem to day in telford
http://www.autotechperformance.co.uk I rang up and spoke to Pete (owner) and he said no problem doing the remote pop down and will sort for £25. I arrived to find Pete working on a mint E30 M3 that was having all the brake pipes replaced.

Pete wasted no time in sparking up the autologic system and then spending a good 20 mins showing me all the options that were avaliable, so i now have an opening and closing roof from key fob and audible alarm etc. Pete then performed a final check to make sure everything was functioning normaly.
Pete drives a 330i and is a big BMW fan he also told me that he is working on building for a customer a M3 CSL race car where they have had the doors and roof custom made from carbon.
Pete set this business up last year after working for Moseley motor sports for 20 years. so has loads of experience.
I just wanted to share as it is very rare to find a genuine guy who really knows his stuff and seems to look after the cars he works on. This is a great find as now have someone to take the Z4 too in future :D
I am not affiliated in any way but just wanted to share if anyone looking for decent garage in west midlands.

Thats excellent! I was planning on using the place in Hull :o and they charges £75 aswell! Thats why I'd been putting it off for so long, especially with the long drive up there.

How long did it take? I could nip in when Im around Telford with work :D

20 mins and that was having a chat and going through all the options so its very quick. i can't recommend them enough great service mention the Z4 forum as i told him about it and he was really interested :thumbsup:

Passing that way next friday, might give him a ring and see what he can do, certainly easier than fitting the module that I haven't got found to fitting yet.

let me know if you give and want to sell it! :)

Great to find a genuine person,

Quick question. Why the hell would BMW not sell the car with these functions in the first place? If each and every car has the ability to do the functions why not have them standard, particularly up and down remote activated roof? I am sure everyone would like that, if not, do it from in the car like you can anyway. BMW might have German efficiency but they clearly have no common sense! How much do you think one of the function change plug in units would be? If it isn't silly money we should all collectively buy one and then send it (probably a few quid each time) around all the forum members, overall cost might then be £10 each even with posting... Food for thought.

Can anything else be reset or changed from the dash? ie. DIY - RESET SERVICE INTERVAL (only for Z4 and E46) BELOW. I am thinking of any of the above features.

1) With engine off and key not inserted keep pushing the left button on the instruments cluster ;
2) Insert key and turn to position 1 (do not leave the previous button) ;
3) Wait about 5 seconds (button alway pushed) until the service will show on the display ;
4) Leave the button for a moment and then push it again until the rESET on the display will start flashing ;
5) Now release the button and quickly push it again when rESET displays when flashing

myself and at least one other member have been trying to sort out the programming of feature to save visits to the dealer, but it's not easy and it wont be cheap if you want a robust solution.

To be honest your suggestion at this time is a non starter, I wish it wasnt, I would gladly help members at meets/cruises if I had the tools. I am still working on it though. :wink:

Does this only apply to older models? My 56-plate facelift does it by default. Press the button once to unlock, then press again and hold it for a few seconds until the roof does its thing. The only issue is, given the total time taken, you do look like a bit of a poser, standing around waiting for it to happen..... :rofl:

Early cars didn't open on the key. But the 'fix' includes getting the hood to close on the key as well. Not many places seem able to programme the cars to do this.

car booked into Autotech for Friday! Will be able to close roof off remote. Will also get some prices from him for servicing, he seems to know what's required for 'M' cars as well

It does look cool though, when the roof just does its thing :)

Must admit, i was a bit jealous of this at the Wales meet yesterday :oops: If you crack it scrutch, id happily throw you a few purple drinking vouchers :P

you need a reinhold module or similar to be able to release the button, I dont believe any amount of programming will allow this facility.

And at a meet, your roof will stop working as the key goes in fail-safe mode when other BMW keys are operating in the area. Sometimes it is even difficult to open the door from a few cm away when you are at a meet and everyone is leaving the pub at the same time ...

I might be being a bit thick here but what exactly are you saying, is this a problem with getting the key reprogrammed or just the airwaves being full of BMW key signals for a few minutes.

Going myself on Friday, he told me someone else from the forum was going in on Friday, what time will you be there i don't expect to there much before about 1 -2 pm.

What I am saying is that if you have to keep the button pressed to open / close the roof, it will stop halfway when there are other cars around with owners opening the doors remotely or so as BMW has a anti theft type safe guard.

With the modules, you don't have that issue.
