Remote Roof Module

Well I was lucky enough to snag myself a Reinhold Engineering http://www.cabrio-module.de/remote roof module from Ebay for just £65 (Vs their advertised web price of E249 or about £194 inc P&P)

It arrived yesterday, so it's now all fitted. Sorry no photos as there's not much to show that you can't see on their website - a tiny black box with 5 wires sticking out, nor is a picture of the hood going up and down any big shakes....

Fitting is an hours job of ashtray out and join to 3 wires for power, neutral and one into the connector that presumably picks up the roff up/down buttons and then underneath of the glovebox out and join to 2 more wires. Hardest bit is identifying specific wires by colour and pin number on sockets under the glovebox by torch even working in the sun....

The instructions are well illustrated but a little poor as clearly translated from German. The sequence is a bit out too. Test fully is followed by reconnect battery, etc.... :headbang:

Teh result is great 3 presses of the key fob and the roof and windows sail down 3 more presses and back to closed. A furhter touch of the button can halt the open or close if required. Good news is even after I put the hardtop back on (yeah I know and it was sunny today...) it becomes a remote for the windows

So a great purchase, cheapest price I could have hoped for and a great mod. Perhaps I'd consider the one touch module sometime but 3 blips of the key is easy enough for me. :) :) :) and I have to retrofit a paddle shift and MFSW next :D

I managed to get noth modules for £116 including postage, have fitted the one touch so far, and used for the first time this week.

hopefully fit the remote one soon.

What tye of connectors did you use or did you solder, and how did you find adjusting the potentiometer

On the connectors I opted for something I hate - scotchlock connectors. I used them for 2 reasons: 1) the location under the glove box is almost impossible to work in, and you will be selecting 2 wires out of a 22 wire bundle with probably less than 2" of cable to play with 2) the instructions warned of dire consequences of allowing a mains soldering iron to earth ground via the wires. As a sub reason if I ever did trade the car I could remove the kit in 10 minutes.

The potentiometers - well I confess they bemuse me. The instructions refer to turning to the left and adjusting until the root works correctly but it seemed to work regardless of where they were. I'm still unsure what they are 'tuning'.

Out of curiosity how many wires to the one touch, where does it locate, etc.

I used scotchlocks on the one touch for much the same reasons.

The one touch has six wires, and you have to cut two of the car wire in half, details posted here.

Located unit in centre console under roof buttons, I guess this is where you have put the remote unit.

Are all the wires in the car for the remote moduel of a sensible diameter, as i noticed a couple of wires for the cigar lighter are 5mm thick which is nt good for scotchlocks.

As you know the wires under the cigarette lighter are rather meaty and those of the module like hair. I actually capitalised on something a muppet had done before. What 'they' had done is trimmed around 5mm of insulation off each of the 2 wires then, wait for this - wrapped 2" of bare wire around it and taped it on...then wrapped it in insulation tape to form a spur :headbang:

Since the insulation was off a larger size scotchblock crimped in without further damage and picked up the module wire just fine. I meter tested it and was happy.

Think I might invest in a solder gun for this one then, I want to keep it clean and tidy.

Did you mount the unit in the centre console?

could you tell us which wires the 5 wires are connected to in the car?

i want to rig something up of my own that is totally different than the module.

this post shows you which wires are used

A quick update and resulting tale of woe.

As I said I used scotchlocks (which I hate) to connect and had results to tell..

Day 1 Alarm went off while driving and doors locked on drive off (programmed not to)
Day 2 windows opened of their own accord while away from car - worrying
Day 3 more alarms and door locking.
Day 4 cd cartdige not detectable
Day 5 hair pulled out :headbang:

Diagnosis undertaken with Reinhold who were very helpful.

Various test done including reversing white and yellow wires to see if 1 output of module faulty.

Replaced all connections with quality solder joints - end of problems :) :)

Likely diagnosis by Reinhold is poor connection. Most errors they get are a result of mechanical wire connections origin....

You forgot the bit about the car leaking more oil due to the module ... :P

Good to hear it all got sorted. I bought a gas solder for that exact purpose as those blocks just don't do it for me.

My profuse apologies for not taking a shot of the oil leaking. I'll find you another 'oil shot' for posting shortly

I tried to tell reinhold that the car needed a service 2 and new tyres as a result of the module too, but they were not wearing that one
