Remote opening and CLOSING of roof questions.

So I've got my new Z, the oil leaks and suspension have been sorted out, I'm now using the car and I'm very happy.

Whilst viewing to purchase I tried a few cars, some would open the roof with the key remote. On the earlier cars I tried it didn't appear to work?

Most owners didn't realise that the roof could be opened this way (remotely). On my car the roof can be opened and closed with the key held in unlocked or locked position in the door lock.

So my question is, I can open the roof and windows with the key remotely, even from a distance which is great. Can my indy program my car to allow closing remotely, is this feature available in other countries or is not available in the software options.

yes it can be programmed
but on the close it will drop the windows an put the roof up, you will then need to repress the lock to button for it to then close the windows
or this is my experience
the gaptech or smartbox will make the open and close in to one touch functions
the gaptech requires tapping into some existing wiring
the smart box is plug n play

Smart Box is E89 only I think.

I thought that too but was wrong:

USA dealer only I think :?

Mine does open and close on the key, but as said, it won't close the windows so it's pretty pointless.

I've also lost the signal half way through the roof cycle which means you just end up looking light a tit anyway

Easiest thing to do is buy a Gaptech module. No problems since I had that.

Is smart box remote roof only, no one touch?
Also at $229 very expensive compared to reinhold or gaptech.

Reinhold and gaptech are the better option over dealer programming as you don't need to keep your thumb on the button, just press three times.

Had exactly this happen to me in Homebase. You just know that anybody who sees is thinking "Ha Ha, what a tw4t"

Yes. So, as an engineer with this whole "imagination" thing going on in my head always, I have this obvious question: Since most of our Zeds have rain sensing wipers, why in the world don't we sense the rain and lift the hood automatically?

I fully realize the legal ramifications of shutting the hood without being in the car directly (lame as it sounds), but why in the world don't folks like gaptech and reinhold tie into the sensor for this and power it on to look for rain if you park and set the option on? Should be simple. Might wear on the battery A VERY SLIGHT bit, but the times you would leave the car with the hood open would seemingly be short durations anyway. I think it is a crime not to tie these two options into one! Anybody else think so? Surely Gaptech has considered this huh? :?

I've got an old E class which has a sunroof that if left open closes automatically when it rains, although my Z doesn't have rain sensing. I think it would be quite simple to adjust the software. With regards to the remote roof option I have access to Delphi and IMPA software so will give these a try because they are free.

Somebody posed this question on the radio in the week. Apparently there was a U.S. Car build in the sixties that had a rain sensor that closed the roof when it started raining. 50 years later we don't have it, must be a reason :?
