Remote locking

Hello!

I have a 2003 Z4 3.0i. Recently the remote locking and unlocking has sometimes not worked, although I can lock and unlock manually with the key without a problem. Any ideas what may be wrong?

Many thanks,

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

The keys self charge from the steering column as you use the car so its a good idea if you have 2 keys to swop them over occasionally to keep the internal battery charged. The keys are sealed therefore if a battery has 'gone' then its a case of splitting the key to get the new battery in - not recommended although it has been done. It may be something else and no doubt others will respond.

I was wondering whether it may be something to do with the sensor on the car itself. Any ideas where this is located?

Always worth doing a search which invariably brings up others with the same problem and hopefully some solutions (search facility at the top right of the page). Here's a link which shows others with a similar issue:

Charge up the second key in the ignition by driving with it for a while.

If the problem still exists you've at least proved or eliminated the key.

Yep - just open the door, insert the spare key in the ignition and drive it. Longer run to charge it up fully.

Sensor is in the rear view mirror

So basically, sometimes I can use it as normal with either key, and sometimes I cannot. So does anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like you've eliminated the key in that if i read your posts correctly both keys work, sometimes?

Try it in a different location to see if you are suffering some signal interference, which I've heard mention of before.

After that I'm out of ideas other than checking the sensor.

Yup; well, the spare key works sometimes, and the other key is just as random.

Now I have been suspecting signal interference as it worked absolutely fine in Tesco's car park and outside the gym. But outside my flat or work, no chance. There are about 20 wireless networks in my block, so I suspect that may be something to do with it, as my iPhone was not connecting properly either. I think I'll persevere for a few days before taking it in to the private garage I use.

Thing is, the car is 7 years old now, with 35,000 on the clock, and I've sometimes thought of trading it in. But when it comes down to it, I just can't bear to part with it: still drives like an absolute dream...
