Remote Key Programming/Initialisation

So... I thought my key would be fairly well charged, but I came to use it on Saturday morning and it seemed to be flat. Presumed I'd left the key at an awkward angle and the battery had become discharged.

Went for an hour or so blast on Saturday to charge the key (and try out the strut-brace). Came home and had a go at the key reprogramming as per the instructions here; http://www.programyourkeys.com/BMW_Z4_Key_Remote_Control_Fob_Programming.html

Can't get it to work. Have tried multiple times but it's just not working :(

It's getting a bit critical as I'm low on fuel and I've no way of opening the fuel filler cap. This doesn't seem normal though, nobody else has mentioned this in the threads I've read. Currently, the glove box is locked, fuel filler cap remains locked. Passenger door cannot be opened (even using the button inside the car once the engine is running). Roof will not go down (I just get a red light when I press the buttons) and the alarm indicator is flashing on/off as if the alarm was armed.

I'm thinking maybe just pull the battery and start from scratch?

I've about 50 miles left and I'm buggered! :)

I've also read;

With no dice :(

HELP ME! :)

Yeah, tried that and still doesn't work - the alarm light continues to blink throughout the whole process too.

I'd try pulling the battery but I e a feeling that could make things worse as the alarm seems to be constantly engaged.

I guess I should nip round to my parents and pick up the spare key, see if that works :/

Ok, so I completely gave up with the 2 billion combinations of key coding routines and pulled the battery off.

As expected, the alarm went off a soon as I disconnected the battery and then continued to go off until I re-connected it a few minutes later. Once reconnected I started the car (doors were already manually unlocked at this point). Everything now back to normal.

I used the "turn key to position 1 and then off again 5 times, hold unlock key and press lock button 3 times before releasing all" method to reset both keys. Everything is now back to normal.

I can see that the "normal" behaviour when the key is uncoded is for the key to open the doors and petrol cap as if the remote unlock had been used. That wasn't happening before, I could only manually unlock the one door. Something was definitely confused, hard reboot seems to have cured it :driving:

I've had this recently but slightly different. Both keys' remote function recently stopped working. No prob, did the reprogramming (pos1, hold, press 3x etc) and both keys fired up, great.

Next time I use the car, no problem, all working well. Day or so later, back to square one, nothing working. Went throug it again, working fine. Got home today and locked ok. Few minutes later, went back to the car, not working again. Sometimes it seems to only work close to the car, other times, as normal.

Is this a sign of an underlying problem? Both keys were affected at once so I doubt it's a key battery issue. I may have read many moons ago it could be a car battery problem but I've used the car a lot this summer and it starts fine, even when left for a few days.

Cheers

Short answer is I don't know... but I'd suggest maybe that it's not *that* unlikely for both keys to be flat at once. I certainly expected my spare key to be flat having not used it for 10+ months. It probably only takes a badly placed bag to hold the keys buttons down and drain the batteries too, so maybe still worth double checking they've both got a reasonable amount of charge? :\
