Remote entry and GM5 module

Hello everyone,

I have a Z4 E85 with an M54 engine from March 2003, and with both keys I started experiencing problems where the doors would intermittently not open or close; the batteries in both keys are fine, so the issue points to the GM5 module. I replaced both relays in it (GM5RD E85 BMW 61.35-6919275), but something must have gone wrong during soldering, because after reconnecting it in the car everything worked as it should except for locking and unlocking the doors or the boot, neither with the remote nor with the central unlocking button on the centre console. With the key slot in the door, the door could be opened and closed, but the passenger door lock did not respond. The original part is no longer available and has been replaced by part number 61.35 9 116 445. I found a used GM5 Star 12 LOW with this same part number from a donor E46 and installed it in the car. After synchronising key 1 first, then synchronising key 2, everything works correctly with key 1; key 2 does everything except lock the doors with the middle button. With both keys, pressing the open button a second time also opens the windows and the roof. You might think the small switch on the circuit board on key 2 is faulty, but after testing it seems to be fine. If I then synchronise key 2 first and then key 1, the latter does nothing at all, while with key 2 only opening the doors and the boot works, the lock button does not work.

Is the problem still with key 2, or does the GM5 need to be coded?
Anyone have an idea?

someone has the same issue before, though it was the gm5 module but it turns out it the "diversity antenna amplifier"Screenshot_20251122_115232_Messenger.jpg

The second key lock button must be working if you are successfully pairing. Just to check is this what you are doing:

Doors shut > switch ignition to position 1 > remove the key and immediately press and hold the unlock button on the fob while pressing the lock button three times. A successful pairing will lock and unlock the doors as you release the unlock button.
Immediately repeat the button sequence on the second key (without putting it in the ignition). Again the car locks and unlocks if paired successfully.

What happens if you only pair the second key?

As an aside, personally I would be coding the GM5 as it didn’t come from a Z4. The coding process takes your VO (applicable modules) and applies the appropriate code behaviours.

I understand the Star 12 can hold more module config than the Star 5 like rear windows etc. I don’t think that’s the challenge but perhaps there is a different config we don’t know about.

Can't say I've ever heard of anyone successfully replacing a 5RD with a Star 12 Low.
I thought I did once, but it turned out it had been wrongly replaced previously so I was just correcting the error.

Thanks for your input.

@GenZed: antenna is fine both keys work at more then 10 meter distance.

@Street: with both keys the pairing is succesfully ended with closing and opening of both doors.
if only key 2 is paired, doors close and open after releasing buttons but closing button on key 2 dosn't work.
The Star 12 Low has only 2 relais for the front windows.

@enuff_zed: The GM5 RD 61.35-6919275 is according BMW parts online replaced with part number 61.35 9 116 445 (Star 12 Low).

I'll contact the dealer to see his view on the matter.
Thanks all.
Ronald

Oh well.
Was only speaking from my personal experience.
I would have tried fitting a replacement 5RD first, as then you only need to pair your keys to it.

Good luck sorting it.

Yes I see. Its the Star12 High that has 6 instead of 4 relays for the rears.

The challenge is the GM5 is going to be coded for a different car with different coding options which we're not familiar with.
A google search suggested Comfort Access on the 3 series can only be active on 2 keys in specific memory positions. Could that start to explain why one key operates differently to the other? I'm grasping at straws.

Your next step has to be to get it coded to the VO for a Z4 surely?

I am sure from experience that e46 gm5 (especially star12) can’t be used with an early gm5 5star car

Are you syncing both keys at the same time, one right after the other?

Sorry to jump into this post without being able to offer any input... but where is this antenna amplifier situated? I wonder if it could be the cause of an issue I have - both keys function properly, but sometimes I need to virtually touch the windscreen to unlock the car and other times it works fine from 30 ft away; same with both keys.

Not quite as extreme symptoms as yours but I found the batteries were charging on mine but not really holding charge, hence range would quickly fail. I sent the keys to a guy on ebay ( We have sent 4 now in total) I was really nervous at first as of course he had my key and my address, but the service was excellent. I dont know how or why they do it for the money, but I have no complaints, range is now awesome. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/167593573656

Sorry for the late replay, but the wife is happy as her key (1) works perfect! She is the sole driver.
As there is no stress, I've not visited the dealer yet.
The synchronising was done one after the other, meaning key 1 first and waiting for doors to close and open, then following same procedure with key 2.( doors close and open as wel)
I found this picture somewhere: it shows the inner mirror with the antenna (backside of mirror glass) and the receiver.
the key is paired with this elctronic part located in the mirror housing.

It's in the "boot" on the left hand side behind the wheel well behind the carpet (below where the antenna is on the fender).
