Reminder: need winter tires? Better get them now!

JetBlackZ - I have not swapped out rotors on a Z4, so I can't answer the question. Call Dave Zeckhausen (he has a web site) and talk to him. I've been dealing with him for years and he has never steered me wrong.

JetBlackZ - 4 snows on a Z4 makes a world of difference. Go with the Axxis pads. No brake dust. While working on the pads, paint the calipers and also the rotor hat. Use a VHT paint for both.[/qoute]

Thanks, would you recommend the OEM rotors or would I be okay with a pair of EBC USR932 Ultimax Rotors or Power Slot rotors?
The reason I am contemplating between the two is because the OEM are so darn expensive on Amazon they are $213 each not per side and the EBC are only $125 per side, and I usually replace the rotors and pads when I redo the brakes.
In the past I have bought Brembo rotors thinking they would be really good for my 3 series but they warped really quick and only lasted a very short time.

I have bought the centric rotors for the front tires as seen here on zeckhausen and they have worked great for me. So good that I just bought rear rotors and pads. I haven't tried the slotted but I imagine they are as good if not better than the centric ones

Aebous - the moderators should have pointed out that you are not permitted to post in threads addressing winter driving conditions since you have no clue what "winter" is :D

Your transgression will likely be overlooked this time given that the topic shift addressed serious stopping instead of cold weather traction :roll:

Good point there AlanL. Do remember that his next duty station will most likely be in an area where he won't even be allowed to wear his uniform or drive a Z4. :evil: Odds are it will be cold...real cold. :P :P :P :poke:

Most excellent - desert rats all need to be exported to someplace where they can appreciate the concept of 4 seasons. Someplace where that missing season can allow for an extended experience will offer an enhanced learning opportunity :evil: :evil:

Yes, you are missing something.

I know its against your nature, but would you care to fill me in? :poke:

In all seriousness, it has to do with density... nitrogen is "bigger" than air... it doesn't leak out of the tire as quickly.... :rofl: You're right, however, that's the last explanatory post for me in 2008.
It is also your first. :poke:

AlanL, a region that has 4 months of extended daylight comes to mind.

That also implies an equal period of none too. Too bad he won't get much of a chance to practice winter driving in this 8)

Aebous - When does this new tour start?

I've been stationed in Omaha, Nebraska for 2 years and Germany for 4 years. I know all about ol man winter, including black ice. Of course, the Z hasn't technically experienced it. I've driven in cold snow on the ground areas (Mt. Charleston) but the roads were mostly clear.

AlanL, no idea when the new tour starts. It's dependent on a ton of different factors, that I'm not sure if i'm allowed to discuss :? A rough estimate I can give, which is mid summer.

Thanks for the info, but it got me thinking...

Air is made up of...

78% N2
21% O2
0-4% H2O
.9% Ar
.4% CO2

Now if we're looking at molecular mass...

N2 = 28.0134 amu
O2 = 31.9988 amu
Ar = 39.948 amu

So, it looks like N2 is one of the smaller molecules in air...Now, there might be some chemistry involved that I'm not tracking on that could allow the molecule to occupy more volume than O2 etc, the triatomic molecules are definately bigger, and take up more space, but the monatomic components (like Argon) may escape easier from the tire, but that's less than 1% of the air to begin with. It's possible that the N2 may react with the O2 and form NO, which would have a higher mass than N2 anyway, but the likelihood of that in the winter when the tires are colder is low.

So...maybe, maybe not?

PhilDZ4, what ever you do, don't ask him what time it is.... :zzzz:

:lol: I'm just trying to understand the reasoning.

And what time zone would you like the time in? Should I just go with standard Zulu time? :rofl:
