Remapping

Cheers guys for all your advice. Have been thinking maybe I should just focus on the outside and maybe change the exhaust and make it sound louder and then get a nice 3.0 in a couple of years. :)

Get a sound generator fitted, that gives it nice sound (inside the cabin)

You are a super star! That is just what I wanted a step by step guide on how to fit it! So where do I order it from? I am useless at all this sorry to ask so many questions.

Also in regards to 98 RON fuel. Does it matter where I get it from? I normally get my fuel from Sainsbury's what is theirs like?

I just phoned my local dealership and gave all the part numbers from the 'how to' thread.

Had them all within a week and fitted in about an hour.

Nice one, sorry to be a pain but how much was all the parts in total? Or individually if its not being a pain.

Ricey, use Shell V Power

Problem is Mike I don't even know where my nearest Shell garage is. I have a Sainsbury's, Tesco's and BP down the road from me.

Tesco 99 will do and it's cheaper than V-Power.

Tesco do 99 and BP do it too, don't think Sainsburys has anything.

Sainsbury's do a Super Unleaded! I don't know what ron it is though?

Tis just good old BS standard super 97.

Last one around as far as I know, all the others have got a 'branded' one now which conforms to no official rating but is priced quite highly.

Just filled with V-Power and can't really tell any difference from normal 97. Maybe on a tuned turbo Skyline, but a 3.0 NA low specific output BMW, hmmm...

Ricey,

if your in england maybe check out a company called vtune, they have depots all over. I've heard good things as I used to be in the vw/audi scene and had a few mates who had their cars remapped from them. I'm planning on having my 3.0l tuned by them soon, but like many have said bmw's are tuned scrupulously from standard so you arn't going to be looking at vast gains. :(

I've always used Tesco99 in my VXR, because it had proven gains from a reputable tuner; however I'm unsure of what I'll use in the Z. Fuel is fairly important to a turbo car, but I presume the same can be said for a big engined car, too.

As for remapping, I personally wouldn't bother. For the sake of a few BHP, you're adding to your insurance costs.

Whilst I agree with most if not all of the posters here that remapping is probably not going to give you a big return in for the expense it will probably cost, I can't believe how many people think just because BMW wrote the original map it must be perfect, RUBBISH BMW have to write a map that will get the car though EU noise testing, EU emissions testing and goodness knows what else, all of these will be a compromise and result in the engine not running as effifcently as it could in certain circumstances, although I don't read many car mags I do read a lot of bike mags and have recently seen an article on this very subject and the results made interesting reading all the bikes where running very rich at specific revs to get the correct level of hydrocarbons to pass the test regardless of wheter it was efficent for the engine or not. Legislation has not kept up with engine development and engines are being strangled because of it.

Here's one for thought, what does a cat convert most of the gases into, what gas in the UK do we now taxed on depending on how much of a certain gas the car pumps out, very simplistic view I know but it makes me think.

Ii it possible to get a Piggyback ECU with different maps for the engine in the way you can fit a Power Commander to a motorbike, which made a huge difference to the drivability of my R1.

apologies for rambling.

what about E-Maps? ( http://www.e-maps.co.uk )
I've heard good comments about them. anyone here used them?
Which companies are the most well respected tuners?

I used emaps for my 320d. Being a turbo the gains were very impressive, along with a smoother/quieter engine on tickover and 2-3mpg gains if I didn't use the new power.

CNL in Rugby remapped my E36 323i. The engine is now super smooth on tickover (now only 400rpm!), has a smoother throttle response and more linear power delivery below 4,500rpm (but no seat of the pants difference in power). However, at 4,500rpm the car now feels as if it has a new lease of life and if far more eager to get to the redline, whereas before you would get bored by 5,000rpm. Fuel economy is about 3mpg better, even though it is now driven with more vigour!

I don't really care about maximum bhp gains from the remap on a car. It is the improved driveability and enjoyment that it can release from a N/A engine. Colin at CNL said that my 323 would gain about 18hp - he wasn't talking about the peak output (which might be only a few horses), but at certain points in the rev range there will be gains of about 18hp. It certainly feels like it above 4,500 - (maximum power in the standard car is at 4,800).

CNL are quite open about the fact that they buy the maps from a company in Germany, which if I recall is run by ex bmw factory engineers, where a series of like engined models are rolling roaded and a near optimum average map is produced from the results.

Vehicle manufacturers are known to alter their own maps - Whilst working at Volvo I can recall the XC90 D5 having 2 engine and gearbox software updates added retrospectively to delivered cars to improve the engines response within the first 9 months of the car being launched. In Sweden Volvo will honour your manufacturer warranty even if the car has been remapped by Rica!

Interesting. Never even heard of them and they are just 3 to 4 miles from my home :)
Dropped a note to them for prices

I'm a big fan of remapping but i agree with Jim and RichardG. Don't look at it as being a gain in overall power because that doesn't really matter, it's much more to do with gaining drivability.

My car has a smoother torque curve and picks up right through the rev range which makes it more userfriendly dy to day. I run it on VPower always (except for the odd excursion to Tesco99 if i have one of their 5p off a litre vouchers!) and always keep it serviced and looked after.

Tyre pressures are also important and should be monitored regularly. For me a map opens up a little more life from an engine and ECU that has been designed for many markets and fuel qualities - just ask the US/Canadian guys and they'll tell you the rubbish grades that some of them have to put up with.

I say DO IT but be aware that it wll not make your car into a Pagani, just a nicer, smoother z4.

Seeing as the engine mapping is being affected how does a remap alter "Sports mode". Essentially our cars have 2 maps anyway so how is each affected?
