Hi all. I've contacted four places today about remapping my car. 2014 E89 2.0i 184 bhp.
All for stage 1. Two of them quoted 260 bhp. The other two said, I'd get 210 - 215 bhp
Could it be that lower ones are quoting at the wheels?
 
Hello Ian, mine was mapped with a rolling road and is 282 bhp and 455nm torque and I presume this was at the crank and not at the wheels, my car has a decat too.

I have spoken to three places; two national outfits and one local. All have given the 270bhp ish figures for my 18i (same engine so should be same end figure). These are all "plug and play" backed up by "generic" dyno sheets, ie maps worked out on one specific car on a dyno. Unless you do it on a dyno you ain't gonna know the figures, so as long as it's an improvement (and apparently it is a BIG improvement) I don't see that it matters what figures they quote, apart from bragging rights. :)

Quite. If the ones you've been looking at are "plug and play", the original dyno test figures are done at wheels and then calculated up for the crank bhp, basically to get the highest numbers possible so it looks better. There is a lot of bullsh*t in mapping figures. The at the crank calculation is only ever a "guesstimate" as they would have to take so many parameters into account to get an accurate figure.
As long as they promise you will feel a difference I wouldn't worry too much.
 
Also different development dyno tests are done on different cars, and different dynos. If you are concerned, ask what the pre-map figures were for the car they tested, I'll bet is was higher than BMW's official figures.
 
Some remapping companies like Celtic quote a stage 1, 2 and 3 which are remap only ie, no hardware. Celtics stage 3 is equivalent to most other remapping companies stage 1 tune. I had a stage 2 remap at performance torque in Wolverhampton which included installation of a decat pipe in intercooler delivering 281bhp and 450nm.

You would think if they offer 3 "stages" that 1 would be a software upload, 2 would be a software upload and some hardware (swap exhaust bits for example) and 3 would be the other two and maybe a "performance" intake or filter or similar?

The remap I'm going for is a simple software upload, based on a map derived from testing "a" car on a dyno. All are quoting 270bhp without any hardware upgrades.

The only way to get a bespoke remap for an individual car is to book a bespoke software upload on a dyno, so the program can be set in real time. And for your £1500 you also get a graph on a sheet of A4 showing you have the meanest car in the west! Shame you can't take it to the pub to show off :cry:
 
It’s a good idea to get before/after Dyno runs when getting the car remapped, Pbondar posted his experience of this when his car produced high peak power but suffered from a dip in power everywhere else.
It was only discovered after testing it on the rollers at a later date.
The cars have the same engines but there’s different ways of mapping them, giving different results :thumbsup:
