Remapping

Hi,

Am looking at getting my sdrive18i remapped and took it to a quantum dealer as they said vould do it via the obd port but when they tried said can't do it and would need to get into the ecu but were reluctant to do so as its glued and they said high chance they might damage it, have also had a couple of other companies say the same. Have spoke to evolve who can do it and also say I can purchase evolve-r and do it myself....also a company called more-bhp in Crewe say can do it on rolling road, anyone had any dealings with either of these as would like some reassurance!!

evolve had a great rep for mini tuning. Eco tune up here in glasgow do theres via the eco.

There are lots of options, i have the tmc tuning chip phase 2, my 2.0 sdrive is now comfortably +250 hp

Evolve remapped my 20i by removing the ecu to reprogram the eprom, rolling road tested to 276bhp/290ftlb torque :driving:

and for £50 I throw in a downpipe.

As my Z4 28i (same engine) is was quicker than any Stock car including 35is and z4M

Regarding durability, I had this on my car for over 3 yrs and 38,000 miles and no issues

The 28i has the same engine & produces 240+bhp, they can safely go higher than that :wink:

This has been discussed several times in detail...search map or Celtic or evolve amongst others...

Insurance is an issue to consider..

The 2.0 unit must be one of the most productive engines in terms of increase in power for little technical effort..

The price of the remap from a quality supplier means huge profits for the dealer, but offer you piece of mind vs cheap versions which maybe could go badly wrong..or just not as good..
 
But doesn't the 28i have uprated components? Or is it simply just software differences?

Do you still have "comfort" and "sport" modes afterwards?
 
Another vote for Evolve, did a very good job with mine and as already said, do a before and after rolling road so you have a solid reference for what's been gained where.

Personally I wouldn't touch Celtic with a bargepole unless you're a big fan of limp mode and warning lights from what I've seen locally.

Engine & turbo/intercooler are identical, it’s just software controlling the power difference & you are still able to select comfort and sport modes after the map :thumbsup:

I would always get it mapped on a rolling road. A good tuner can 'tweak' your car individually if its running and results are live on a dyno. I always use Celtic tuning in Cornwall. Their establishment is state of the art in every way, cars are rolling road mapped in sound proof booths while you watch it all on CCTV from the comfy brand new waiting room while they feed you coffee.
 
Agreed if a map is done correctly, is better than a piggyback system - however, the piggyback system gives you greater flexibility. Different Maps, extra features, greater flexibility - and almost get the car back to stock if and when required.

As I am considering BM3 for my current car, rather than remap for the above reasons.

IIRC A quick check on real oem shows that all the engine internal components are the same, i think its only the ecu that differs. If you think about it its great business sense from BMW 1 engine = 3 different models. I seem to remember the only other difference between the 18i and 28i is the front brakes are bigger on the 28i
 
I fitted a BMS Stage 1 Tuning Box, didn’t expect great results but it’s been on for 20k+ Miles, perfectly safe and ran 270 odd bhp. Happy with that!
 
Fitted a JB1 yesterday and car runs fine, pulls much harder, only problem is the yellow car on a ramp symbol lights up, no other warning and after a run if I restart the engine it goes away, any ideas?

Do yourself a favour and putt he JB1 in the bin. It's a cheap piggyback device, not surprising you have engine warning lights!

An engine remap would be a much better choice.
 
As it’s an approved used car it has 12 month warranty so don't want the ECU cracked open yet and can remove the JB1 as and when. I have to say I did a lot of research and was sceptical at first but the car pulls much harder and power delivery is very smooth so have no complaints, will run it for a few days to see if it sorts itself as think it the light is because the battery was disconnected…….
 
Interesting read.
Ive been looking at the jb4 from burger motorsports for my 2 series vert only 15mths old so still under warranty.and at £ 500. The jb4 aint cheap so will be following your comments to see how you go.
