Remapping Z4 3.0 (2004)

Hi All,

On the on going list of mods I would like to do is consideration for remapping. I have fair experience in turbo charged engines with my last set of wheels having a stage II remap with a full 3 inch free flow 100 cell sports cat exhaust etc....

As this is a N/A engine I am aware that there will be none of the drastic BHP increases as with a turbo charged engine. This is my first BMW so not sure who provides a "quality" remap. From previous experience there is a lot of rubbish out there so would look to fellow forum members for who to go for in the BMW arena? My last remap was done by MTE which was smooth and progressive through the rev range but they don't do BMW.

I have just had my car remapped by Evolve who I highly recommend as a BMW specialist, they previously remapped my e36 too.

It would have looked slightly better but my new tyres were slipping, that said the gains from that remap are evident

Greg at Protuner, based in Redditch. He REALLY knows his onions, but is usually very busy. Will live map it rather than just do a file upload.

That said i wouldn't hold out much hope for gains, there is little to be had from the M54. A simple throttle adaption reset might see you happy, and is free.

11th of October we are having an end of season meet there if your local to Luton feel free to pop down, it's a Evolve, Eurothrasher, totalMcars collaboration meet.

They don't map or dyno on the day but you could always ask questions, eat some burgers and say hello :D

for the price you pay, you are best saving up for a supercharger (or an //M as some will point out).

Honestly, BMW have pretty nailed the m54 block for power and performance right from the factory, so unless you're modding it, it's really not worth the cost.

expect to pay around £400 for an increase of 12-15bhp and about 15-20nm torque... I don't think you're really going to notice that change, especially as looking at the pic Katie_K posted, it's right up at the top end of your rev range.

supercharger gets you at least 70bhp more (unsure on torque, but it's a considerable amount) and will come in way way lower on the band (think 2k, not 7-8k)... but then the price is around the £2.5k mark.

they both work out at about £30-35 per bhp.. but the difference being the supercharger is only stage one.. you can always look for more boost, wheras a map is a one shot thing.. and if you change your intake/exhaust/whatever, you'll likely need a new map doing.

FI is the route of champions

Yeah the big difference in mine is about 4/5k revs that said the car is a lot smoother all round.

Dropping her off soon for Evolve to use it as a development car for the new Eventuri Vai intake system will update accordingly

Supercharger is always the way to go if you can front the big bucks :)

I had good luck with the Shark Injector from Jim Conforti. One of the benefits is that there's no sending off your ECU. Plug up the unit to your OBD2 port, put a charger on the car, and it will upload its tune. The tune will give you 5-10 whp, but the greater benefits are the 7k rpm redline and more intuitive throttle response. You can revert back to stock at any point. That's about the most you will get from a mail order tune. You'll get a little more from a dyno tune, but there are better ways to spend your money IMHO.

Thanks All,

Having had a custom map on my previous car I think that with N/A will leave well alone as not worth it for minor improvement. In reality Z4M is the route.

Indeed - someone I know with a Z4 3.0 was told he'd get very little gain for the money spent, so he swapped his in for an //M :)
