Remapping the N20 - insurance and warranty?

Anyone who's had this done

What happened when you told your insurance company?

If you had BMW warranty did it invalidate it (assuming they found out)?

Insurance price will likely be increased.

BMW warranty will be void on components effected by the remap (if they find out)

sunnydays has summed it up I reckon. Insurance companies these days will look for anything that is not declared to get out of paying up, even things such as painting brake callipers is nowadays seen as a modification.

Thanks both

Any recommended insurers who deal with modified cars? I suspect a lot of mainstream insurers won't touch them

Best off just asking your insurer really, mainstream insurers will cover it imo. My insurer charged me something like £10 to add the remap on my 35is.

I’m with LV and declared my remap on 23 December, they charged me £4.46 (policy expires on 14 February). My zed is booked into the local garage on Tuesday to have the Bilstein B12 suspension fitted. Waiting for an insurance quote from Chris Knott.......

My insurance quotes varied from almost double to complete refusal - the "specialists" wanted well over a grand with the same as an excess - for reference I asked for quotes for 8k mileage pa (3k was for class 1 business) as a second car.

I'm a 51 year old environmental health officer, working for a council, my wife is a teacher and second named driver, full NCB (around 20+ years claim free) - living in East London near Epping Forest

Unfortunately not - I've got the 20i and was looking at remapping it to 270, but I can't justify that increase in insurance. If you do find an insurance company willing to quote on a remap, check that they are aware of the increase, one quote was an extra £50 over the renewal, when I read the quote in detail it was only for an increase of around 12%, when I called them back and advised them that a "stage 1" without any physical mods could boost from 184 up to around 280, depending on the tuner, they got cold feet and declined

Thanks - I will wait until my 12 months warranty is up and then see what my options are - like you I'm not sufficiently bothered about a power increase to justify a big hike in insurance premium - I'd be quite happy to get the power (but more importantly the torque) up to similar levels as the 28i
