So I've recently bought and installed the TMC unit in my 20i after umming and arring for ages and a lot of questions and reading up on how these things 'fool' the ECU and everything that could go wrong. Understanding the risks I went ahead.
After installing it the result is very noticeable

. There is a very noticeable push at 3,000rpm which feels great and continues to about 6,000rpm especially in sport mode. By no means has it turned the car into a muscle car but it has added that extra power where I was starting to feel it was lacking (after 17 months of driving). This actually got more noticeable after the first couple of drives as the ECU had more time to adjust. So far I have driven it for the past couple of hundred miles with no warning lights no problems and no difference in oil temps. Even though I don't drive the car hard all the time (no point on the roads!) it has been very useful for overtaking!
The hardest part was working out where to install it in the engine bay. I decided to mount behind where the current electronic box is. Before installing I bought an infrared laser thermometer. After I stopped measuring the temperature of various things (walls, people, even cats) I used it to monitor the engine bay temps inlet and exhaust/turbo side with and without the box on. This is in addition to closely monitoring the oil temp gauge. So far there has been no difference at all in the oil temperature and the box itself averages 40-50 degrees after a run and engine bay temps seem stock too.
Before I installed it I even wrapped the tuning box in a breathable membrane and aluminum insulation tape in order to reflect any radiant heat as I was concerned the box would get hot - I know the N20 engine likes to run hot in stock for emissions reasons. Perhaps I could remove this now as it is a bit OTT,
I am now interested in finding a dyno where I can run with and without the box to observe the changes on a graph. I know there is no point comparing different dyno results so I need to find a good dyno where I can do both tests.
I'll take some photos soon,
