Did the tuner give you any warnings of potential damage to the B48? I am wanting to do my 320i but I have seen a few warnings about (rare) piston damage which is putting me off TBH.Timdon said:Just had my z4 20i b48 remapped at West Yorkshire Tuning, from standard 197 bhp 232 lb.ft torque to 296 bhp 307 lb.ft torque, the difference is incredible it feels like a different
I will be keeping up with the servicing every 6000 miles using BMW filter and oilPondrew said:Did the tuner give you any warnings of potential damage to the B48? Introduced in May 2019 this engine features a reinforced crankshaft with larger main bearings and new pistons with a lower 9.5:1 compression ratio, this allows the engine to take more boost pressure from a larger turbocharger, which blows compressed air through a reworked intake tract.
Mine is an early B48 (2016) with 181bhp as standard, so presume it is the higher compression one. Not too bothered about doing it now, as the car is fine but would like a bit more 'shove' sometimes as it runs out of puff quite easily on acceleration.M1k3yC said:Pondrew said:I am wanting to do my 320i but I have seen a few warnings about (rare) piston damage which is putting me off TBH.
I briefly looked into this because the engine in my Mini (F56 JCW) is a B48 putting out c. 230hp. Assuming that this Wikipedia page is accurate: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_B48 I noted the following regarding the 225kW (302hp) version:

No mention of internal changes up to and including 195kW (261hp) so if I had my JCW tuned my original thinking was to go much closer to the 260hp figure than 300hp. I didn't progress it in the end - keeping up with the minor hassles of one modified car (my MX-5) has proved sufficient.

Well the same B48 as mine was fitted to the 330i with 245bhp, so presumably that would be quite safe. Problem I have is my favourite 'chipping' company only do a 'full fat' 280bhp tune and have a caveat on their website saying, basically, it could go horribly wrong! The only 'man in a van' one I've seen at 240bhp is Celtic Tuning and I have heard conflicting stories about them. I am not going down the rolling road map route, as it's too much hassle and there isn't anywhere nearby (that I would trust).M1k3yC said:Pondrew said:Mine is an early B48 (2016) with 181bhp as standard
This is the same power as a Cooper S, I think. "Only" mapping it to c. 230hp would be on par with a JCW and give you over 25% more power. Unless there are further differences between the two setups over and above the remap then I'd have thought you could assume 230hp was tried and tested given how many JCW hatches must have been built. But what do I know :idunno: (not much - you've been warned!)
