300bhp without add ons is never gonna happen to your N52 E86.
If you really need the extra bhp it's S54 time.
 
Yes I wish I had purchased a proper m prior to my e86 now I have the feel for more power but I've already put a few grand into this and more tomorrow after my remap who knows maybe in time il go all out for daddy of all z4s.
 
Is this one of those plug & play 'bought in bulk' from Alibaba specials...or a proper rolling road measure, find where the flat-spots are, ensure fuelling is correct, ensure engine & cooling system is all good, before spending a day running through different setups to provide a remap specifically for your car?

BTW, where is the extra 17bhp occurring in the rev range, and where are they setting the new rev limit (as I'm sure they're not removing it completely), and what warranty are the offering on you killing it by using the extra revs?
 
Given that all power curves drop off at the higher end of the revs, why are you taking the risk of switching off the rev limiter?
 
There is absolutely zero point in increasing the rev limiter without cams / breathing mods. In fact I would be highly suspicious of anyone doing it as a stand-alone mod (even with a remap). What you really need to see is the torque increase at 2000 - 4000rpm. That’s what really matters. I bet there is hardly any difference - the N52 is already an incredibly efficient engine with it’s 3-stage DISA. What they probably will change is the throttle mapping, much like a pseudo sport mode. Customer feels like they have a power gain and cash in the ‘tuners’ pocket.

The power tails off top end because there is a soft limiter on the n52. I had mine raised and it made a peak power at 7.4krpm on the Surrey rolling road.

It was running happily for the subsequent 20k or so I did in the car including trackdays, and I presume it is still running well now (I sold it last year on 100k).

Who is the mapping company? Worth asking them if they have a translated copy of the DAMOS file - if they say no or ask what that is, I would pack up and leave personally, because more than likely they've picked the map up off a repository on a mapping forum....
I would further caution that the power increase figures quoted are extremely optimistic. And if you haven't done much reading on the subject I'd be even more cautious about getting the car mapped. Have a search on the forum at least - there have been a couple of threads on mapping recently - I personally wouldn't bother unless you are trying to alter very specific areas of how the car drives, because ultimately you're very unlikely to get more power (and if you do it won't be noticeable, and more than likely will come at the detriment to other parameters within the ecu unless your mapper really knows what he's doing). As a side I believe using a map to iron out flat spots is bonkers - flat spots are indicative of engines not running right, if it can't run right on the standard map, there's either a mechanical issue or a sensor issue - both of which absolutely should be resolved before even thinking about mapping!
 
Thanks for the advice guys its appreciated il do my homework first before I spend $ on such a small amount of power as yous say the power figures looked good all the same but maybe a s54 is the way to go watch this space.

However I was alluding more to the fact that I've never seen a power curve that keeps rising. They always drop off what we used to call the 'powerband' at some point.
So I was thinking that, by the time you hit the rev limiter you should realistically be another gear up anyway (unless you're on a track perhaps).
I was considering that the OP my have been aiming for a magical figure without paying due attention to the physical limits of his engine with regard to rpm. Not knowing his mechanical/engineering knowledge level, I was hoping to at least make him think about the potential for damaging his engine.

I concede that my comment may have been a little short of qualifying detail, for which I apologise.
The fact that it gave you a moment of amusement does, in some way, alleviate my concerns.

I really wish there was an easy power boost on these cars without having to Go nuts and get a supercharger kit.

I was hoping to get a remap done too but it just doesn't seem worth it with this car.

Which is a shame because there's a Leon FR that I see on my commute and just goes! I can't stay anywhere near him.

However raising the limiter will not necessarily put the car 'out of the powerband' - you'll have to go quite a lot higher in the revs for that to be the case - remember torque and hp cross at 5250 rpm, so your torque can continue to reduce but the revs increasing still means you're getting good hp... Its very different to a diesel remember, where its quite common to be making a lot less horsepower at the top end than midrange - purely because the revs aren't rising as fast as the torque is falling - so the multiplication of the two means power is dropping... If that makes any sense?

My main concern was that the OP was searching for a 'bar talk' figure but not giving due consideration to the extra stresses on the engine.
Hopefully that is not the case.
In the real world the torque is a much more useful tool than the bhp anyway. If you can't quickly overtake the slowcoach in front you will never find the open road to check out the top end bhp. :)
 
Don't forget to add in the extra cost of your increased insurance premium - assuming your current insurer still wants your business (mine were okay about it when I asked before I did the mods, but 3 months later after I'd done them the insurer changed their minds, as their bank of underwriters had changed and they didn't have one that would cover my specific risk profile).

I'd check with them first, otherwise you may end up with a stupidly high rise along with an equally stupid admin fee...although you may still be better off than cancelling and taking getting insured elsewhere.

In my case, shopping around got me a lower price for a modified car than for an unmodified one (and a bitter period I had with insurer Adrian Fux means I'll neither use nor recommend them again).

Most definitely intentional.

What happened was a long time ago, and they're probably better now, but had me facing trouble with the law for about 6 months due to an error they kept saying was fixed, but never was. I finally just went elsewhere and ended up paying for my insurance twice.

They don’t even make 265 from factory :rofl:

As stated, if you want 300bhp either get an M or the N54 E89.

Haha yup I think we're definitely agreeing :rofl: the pub figure result is exactly what I was worried about!

Yeah torque is useful unless you're stirring the box ;)but yeah totally get what you mean :P
