So I was thinking that, by the time you hit the rev limiter you should realistically be another gear up anyway (unless you're on a track perhaps).
I was considering that the OP my have been aiming for a magical figure without paying due attention to the physical limits of his engine with regard to rpm. Not knowing his mechanical/engineering knowledge level, I was hoping to at least make him think about the potential for damaging his engine.
I concede that my comment may have been a little short of qualifying detail, for which I apologise.
The fact that it gave you a moment of amusement does, in some way, alleviate my concerns.

I mean in light of your 'further qualifying detail' it makes a little more sense :roll:
However raising the limiter will not necessarily put the car 'out of the powerband' - you'll have to go quite a lot higher in the revs for that to be the case - remember torque and hp cross at 5250 rpm, so your torque can continue to reduce but the revs increasing still means you're getting good hp... Its very different to a diesel remember, where its quite common to be making a lot less horsepower at the top end than midrange - purely because the revs aren't rising as fast as the torque is falling - so the multiplication of the two means power is dropping... If that makes any sense?

My main concern was that the OP was searching for a 'bar talk' figure but not giving due consideration to the extra stresses on the engine.
Hopefully that is not the case.
In the real world the torque is a much more useful tool than the bhp anyway. If you can't quickly overtake the slowcoach in front you will never find the open road to check out the top end bhp.![]()
