Remap Insurance

Well that was surprising.
I just called my insurer (LV) to find out the likely extra premium for a 280bhp remap on my 2015 2.0i Auto.
Answer = the princely sum of £17.30 per year.

So that won't be holding me back...

That’s good to know! Who are you insured with if you don’t mind me asking? And how much for the remap?

Might be a different story when you come to renewal time, especially if you want to switch insurer for a better deal.... Anyone had any experience with this???

Sounds right. Admiral only charged me £25 at 23 years old for a remap on my 35is. Was the same on the 35is I had after too.

Renewal price was also fine

Just renewed my insurance. The difference between the insurance quotes was about ~£17 with the 380bhp remap.

Out of interest, how do they risk assess remaps?

ok, I know, the answer is "its insurance, f*ck knows how they price things" but with a remap I guess its a performance issue as they don't care if the engine blows and there is visually nothing shown to make it more likely to get nicked.

So if its performance, does age come into it?

They look at the statistics and relationships around remapped cars and claims, I would imagine. Age would also be a factor, but every case is different.

This is what I love about insurance, it is entirely based on statistics to the point where you can break the algorithm's 'common sense' with a bit of experimentation.

As it is entirely based on statistics, you just need to look at the likelihood of the car crashing with the given parameters. Young people, very old people, and taxi drivers do crash cars, experienced drivers don't. So find a car that falls outside of the risk parameters (vauxhall vectras/toyota avensis/honda accord are high insurance due to taxi drivers).

So as a young driver I just needed to look for my first car as one that kids don't drive, and kids don't crash.
Golf GTI Turbo insurance: £4000 (kids drive them and crash them)
Lamborghini Gallardo insurance: £2500 (kids don't drive them and don't crash them)

From a common sense point of view, the Lambo should be significantly more expensive to insure, and this was the extreme that got me thinking about it.

Fiat Punto: £1350
Vauxhall Corsa 1.2: £1300
BMW Z3 2.8: £1100
Jaguar XK8: £1000
Mazda MX5: £800

That's how my first car was a 200hp rear-wheel drive convertible with heated leather seats. :driving:

Coming back to remaps, it is as sunnydays has said, the statistical likelihood that people with remaps crash cars. On cars in your price bracket at your age with your occupation are slightly more likely to crash their car and claim. People who have done 'body modifications' are significantly more likely to crash and the insurance premium is much higher (probably because of sooped up peugeot 206s).

One thing that really annoys me with insurance companies is the way they assume you are a bigger risk if you have been involved in an accident, even if you're completely blameless.
I was in my old Astra when a numpty tourist in a hired motorhome turned out of a junction straight into the side of my car. He admitted it was his 3rd incident and he'd only had it on hire for 5 days so far.....

Then somebody clipped the rear offside of my van when it was parked, completely legally, outside my house. I wasn't even in it, but because the guy stopped and I claimed the £800 odd of repairs I'm deemed to be a higher risk. Doesn't matter what vehicle it was, how much it's worth or what mileage I've told them I'll cover in a year - on renewal I questioned why the premium had gone up when I had an extra year's NCD and was told it was because my vehicles had been involved in accidents!

Must depend on the insurance company. I’ve been involved in two non blame accidents in last two years. One when I was in the car and one when I wasn’t.

Renewed my insurance on the Z4 today with Aviva with claims already on their system as been with them three years. £188 fully comp an increase of about £20 I think which I’m just putting down to general price increase.

Jeesh £ 188 !!! I'm paying Direct Line £ 600.-- :o

I have full no claims. Never had an accident or been in one in 42 years on the road. Renewal is next month. I know what i'll be doing

Funnily enough, I had to go the other way. Aviva wanted £200 more than Direct Line and refused to even try to price match when I rand them after their renewal quote arrived.

I get a 10% discount for having another policy with them but even then it still wouldn’t be expensive. This policy is fully comp Protected NCD, business use and 6000 miles pa

One drawback is the excess which is £650. I both phoned them to try and negotiate and also did an internet search with the view of changing. With Aviva there’s a vehicle specific £500 excess applied by there underwriters and is non negotiable Plus a £150 compulsory excess (their lowest)

The usual search engines came back with quotes that had a slightly lower excess, circa £500, but premiums were £50+ dearer so I just decided to stay with Aviva

My E90 325i is £224 with Aviva but 15000 miles pa PNCD, Business use but only £150 excess

£600 thats crazy! Im 53 and the car is garaged (mines with Admiral now), only used social /domestic (don't know if that makes a difference) and I have another 2 cars, try one of the comparison sites and see what that comes up with, I went through Moneysupermarket.com. You've got to shop around every year, just had my house insurance renewal in from Tesco Bank and it has gone up... so shopped around and got it cheaper than last year with.... Tesco Bank, its insane! they rely on consumer complacency
