(Relatively) Low cost Big Brake Kit (BBK) for the non 35i E89s

If you decide to do the BBK I suggest I do have a fully refurbished set of rear standard size calipers n discs in matching colours forsale!

Anyone with Bimmergeeks Protool or an indie with ISTA etc can do it..its a 5 minue job!

I would be very interested in a ready-to-go rear set of discs and callipers… I’ve got a price through for the fronts, with expected BMW ‘can’t advise and can’t guarantee’ so just checking I’m not missing a trick here and end up with an expensive box of bits! A

As long as you order

or

or the BMW UK same part number you will be fine

You will need a new BMW brake pad warning sensor as the one in the BBK is for E90s that had a different connector..

So I have a set of re-furbed calipers by Big Red Calipers with everything checked and updated..

They have been fitted to my car for 500 miles so technically they are used.

They come with BMW pads and BMW OE discs.

I spent around £350 on the calipers and around £200 on the discs and pads

If you would like to pm me with an offer which I can consider. :tumbleweed:

Perfect! We’ve a local BMW specialist - Bartlett’s - who I contacted yesterday. They may be able to install if my mechanically-minded pal and I run scared.

They just need to go to the DCS sub system and tick / add the option for performance brakes..that will then toggle the other DCS options and change some of the more obscure parameters..

You may want to drive it before changing it and then afterwards just to see the difference?

A lot of these things are personal tastes..

So I’ve had a helpful chat with local BMW specialist Bartlett’s. It’s satisfying that they remember my M3 of several years ago. Damian Bartlett has given me a good price to supply and fit the front upgrade using 34110444738. Suggested this is more economical than after market option such as Brembo… he’s also aware of the settings change which will be needed, which is helpful. It was mentioned that some customers talk of softer feeling brake pedal when the BBK is added, prob due to a change in effort. So your advice about testing and trying is sound.

Anyway, it’s booked in with Bartlett’s for next Thursday!!

If it all goes wrong, on Friday I will have a BMW front brake kit for sale on here… :( Pictures will follow…

Hi Pbondar I’ve dropped you an updated DM today. Please let me know if you’ve got it. My account is showing it as Outbox (1) which makes me nervous of it’s whereabouts. A

Hello been away working for a few days..back home,…I’ve got your PM thnx..will send some pictures of the rear brakes this weekend to your email address..

Big day today.. having the front OEM brake upgrade fitted to my 23i by Bartlett’s in Huntingdon, Cambs. This is the …738 part specific for the 330i (I believe) which has been recommended here (and elsewhere) for the Z4. I’ll add some pictures when I get it back later, all things being well.

So I will attach a ‘before’ and ‘after’ shot… albeit the ‘before’ is the current rear but you’ll get the point as to why I’ve done this (front was similarly ‘industrial’ looking and a corroded disc. The …738 kit went in a dream I’m told.

There is a little troubled news, which is the courtesy health check has identified both rear alloys are cracked. Something to ponder now as to options, but that’s not for this topic.

Anyway, extremely happy with the new look - they look more impressive than the pics do justice - and will undoubtedly add to braking performance especially as my Z4 is an auto. Rears will be colour matched in a few weeks… A5E093261-254B-4AC3-B75C-D8D0B34F84A8.jpeg53782BE7-584E-4E5D-929F-16C6B449F5BA.jpeg

I'm biased of course but I like the OE look of the kit

As I said you can toggle and even tweak the DCS s/w settings to set the 'feel up'

326m wheels are a liablity

5 spokes supporting a 19" wheel on low profiles seldom works for long..add run flats and its good night Vienna for most..

as your alloys look nice I'd get them welded as its fairly inexpensive vs a new set of wheels, but be aware they might crack again.

There's widely varying degrees of tolerance for the 326's on this forum. I've chosen to give mine a refurb (as well as welding), running on non runflats, and hoping they will last.... My wallet may still regret that choice though if they crack in the near future!

I guess i'm intolerant.. 🤣 :tumbleweed:

Each to their own..

Never liked the look of them anyway but like all things personal taste etc..

they do look lovely. I must get mine painted...

Thanks clarker63 I like them and they do look great in the darker shade. I will get a second opinion to see if they are recoverable, but I’m also cautious as Peter has flagged too… I’m seeing it as an opportunity to consider OE and alternative rims. Now, please excuse me, I’m off down the garden to pick some more cash from the money tree, metal detect for treasure and pan for gold 🤣

hi Just reading through this thread... and interested to do this... Did you get the '35i rear callipers from the US just so you could refurb them and not lose the use of your car, or was there another reason. I have just compared the 35i and the 20i realoem parts list and they seem to be the same?

Cheers...
