Registration plates

Hi all, got pulled over today by the cops for having "small" registration plates.

I asked her "whats wrong with them?"

She rudely replied "Whats not wrong with them!? They are too small! They aren't the correct legal size."

She then pulled out some measuring device and measured the length of them (from left to right, the way in which the registration is printed). She shook her head.

She told me the correct plate size, but i've forgotten.

My question is however, is it ok to have any plate size as long as you display all characters and don't alter the character size and font?

My plates have only been chopped about 1.5 inches from both sides as I dont like borders, and the charcter font and size is the EXACT same as a standard registration plate.

if anyone knows the correct plate dimensions along with the correct character font size it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Quick google :poke:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/vehicle-registration-numbers-and-number-plates

Bottom line there must be an 11mm margin all round

Characters must be 79mm tall
Characters (except the number 1 or letter I) must be 50mm wide
The character stroke (the thickness of the black print) must be 14mm
The space between characters must be 11mm
The space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 33mm
The margins at the top, bottom and side of the plate must be 11mm
Vertical space between the age identifier and the random numbers must be 19mm

As long as you haven't messed with the font, size of the digits, border or 11mm and the BSAU? Mark then I suggest to you swiftly tell her to f**k off.

I wouldn't ! :D

Maybe a copy of the regulations in the car. You could ask politely to show you which part you were not conforming to.

What was the outcome? Did you get a fine?

No fine, just a slip handed to me saying that I need to get new plates and then go to an MOT tester for them to sign off the slip.

I agree, I don't like number plates on front bumpers either!

There was talk a few years ago about small and illegally spaced plates where the vehicle would only get a few warnings/fines before the plate would be removed from the vehicle and the vehicle would have to be reregistered, possibly on a Q plate.
Dont know if this was scare tactics or not and never heard anything more about it.
Apparently its the same fine for not having a plate as it is for an illegal one.

I paid £60 and had to be done within 28 days. I hardly ever drive my Zed and even rarer to see the fuzz where i live, if one passes me i put my foot down and hide down a side road, plus its in my boot so i would say it fell off so f**k em. :driving:

Lol, yeah your really socking it to the man hiding down a side road hoping they don't come after you  You realise the fact you've been caught once with no plate would most likely be on a PNC check of your vehicle so your hide it in the boot tactic would work for about a minute until they do that check and realise your taking the piss! :poke:

Really don't see the big deal with plates, everyone has them, who cares? Each to their own I guess!

OK so when you checked your plates against the specifications posted above what part if any of the measurements shown do you fail?

Curious as there are 3 cars with small fully compliant small plates and in 5yrs + and countless miles and MOT's never even been asked a question about them.

It makes it worse when the dealerships bolt the assembly on leaving you a big cost to repair their handiwork :x

The plates have only been trimmed from the sides, everything else is standard. So I failed on this one : 'The margins at the side of the plate must be 11mm'.

Fair enough then to have a ticket if you breached a part of the requirements. Bit of a jobsworth though to do so.

Btw - plenty of sellers do legal small plates

Bought my plates not realising technically they are illegal ie whilst they are the correct size and properly spaced they have a BMW logo and no postal code but in my view look good :) I do have another set for MOT time just in case ! Never been pulled up but I suspect if I do commit a traffic misdemeanor they would just add it on the list :(

I think it's more that the plates are an easy spot to stop drivers. After that they can have a good Look at everything. Tyres to lights to drink & drugs.

I think they are standard dims and font so ANPR can read them reliably - oh and speed cameras of course!

Sorry - that's entirely my fault for rushing a post on my iPhone.

Mods can actually edit, change, move, delete anything, but can also make slips

I'll edit it to reflect my comment, but not removed else your post makes no sense.
