Registration plate lights failure

My registration plate lights in my E89 seem to have failed. Long story short, I changed the interior bulbs to LED recently. Turns out the ones I got weren't the correct canbus even though they said they were. I had them in for about a week. During this time i kept getting registration light failing warning light. I ignored it because they visually looked like they were working.

At some points my registration lights died. I removed the improper interior bulbs and put in proper canbus ones. Made no difference to get my registration plate lights working, but at least no dashboard errors. I then directly replaced the registration plate lights with compatible brand new LED ones but they didn't work too. I must state the existing ones were already LEDs .

Any ideas?

Would you consider putting the originals back in? At least it won't fail an MOT test.

I read it that the original number plate lights stopped working & were then replaced by led versions which didn’t work either?

Changing the interior bulbs to LED shouldn't have any affect on the license plate lights. Which would explain why you find no difference when you change the interior lightbulbs again. I suspect the problem lies elsewhere, a blown fuse perhaps?

Looks like the footwell module disables permanently the relevant circuit after 10 such reports have occurred...good luck..

I've only got LEDs. These were the ones that came when I bought the car.

Do you know if police can pull you over for this?

I think it's the circuit as I somehow got one to come on yesterday. But it was flickering the entire time and sometimes causes my indicator bulbs to also flicker.

Probably find a multi connector with a number of ground wires to one common attach point on body.
Might be corrosion if some damp has got on it.
