Im getting a new registration this week and the plate only has to be 338mm wide as its only 5 characters, so ive set about checking the size of the plate on my car and heres what im left with...

I want to reduce the visibility of the holes in the short term until I get an M bumper + respray. Already I have removed a lot of the protruding plastic that the screws pulled out.

I'm not looking for it to be perfect, just not noticeable from a distance, any ideas / thoughts greatly appreciated.

I'm probably missing something but why can't you just put the number in the centre of a standard sized plate?
If you use a smaller plate you may also attract the attention of the Old Bill as I believe the plate has to be a standard size to be legal.

I can, but just want a smaller plate.
Also, I've checked the rules, 338mm is a legal size for 5 characters (5x11mm for the spaces and gaps either side, 5x50mm for the characters, 33mm for the group spacing)
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/PersonalisedRegAndNumberPlates/DG_181503
As long as it meets the spacing requirements and is reflective, its legal

If only a quick fix then I would sand it flat, minimising impact to surrounding area.... Then stick I bit of waterproof tape over it and colour it in with a paint correction pen. I did this with some holes I had in my old car for a few months.. Where it had a spoiler fitted, which I removed.

with sanding, I'm worried about damaging the surrounding area, especially with lower grip papers.

If I was to make a tiny mistake, could i try to resolve with 2000w/d and polish out, or would i need to go higher?

What I did.... (Which I didn't want to say first time round I case it goes horribly wrong for you  ) was attached the smallest sanding head to my dremmel and just flatten it completely... Looked a mess under the sticker but it was flat... Then stuck my sticker on top!!!

Also off topic... But has your phone got a gameboy case on it  looks like it in one of the pics

One of my friends has the same gameboy case on their iPhone!

Any thin parcel tape will do... Just primer it and paint it. I will see if I can get pics of my jobbie... Close up you can see it, but from a far, especially with some dust is less noticeable then bullet holes

Liam -

Chop down and plastic weld your original plate mount. 2" from the centre did mine. That will conceal 2 holes

For the others use a tapered tool to in effect push the protruding plastic in so it becomes flush with the car. Squirt clear silicone in and allow to set.
That would disguise it

Touch up paint on the surface will take it that next step.

Of course it's nexer going to look right until you get the bumper filled, flatted and resprayed, but it will take away the black hole that's really visible.

Thanks CJ, do you have pictures?

I'm actually losing about 7 inches as I'm going from a 520mm plate to a 338mm, as said ill probably try and get it as smooth as possible and touch up paint it.
