Redish Motorsport inspection II & Vanos Rebuild

I have been a member on this forum for about 6 years but rarely post. I must however post this entry. To praise the work, professionalism, attention to detail and care that Redish Motorsport took of my Z4MR. It had developed a rattle that made the engine sound more like a diesel. Turned out that the intake cam sprocket bolts were all loose and one had even snapped. Vanos was completely rebuilt as well as a precaution. Beware of this rattle guys as it is happening all too often on this engine.
James and Luke sorted thie problem, kept me well informed by phone and text and also completed an inspection II (required 22 shims). The engine now purrs like a cat and is much more responsive.
:D
I would highly recommend Redish Motorsport and it is worth the travel.

What miles does you are car have on it Dogooder?

Also if it isn't rude, how much was the bill? I am looking for a place to take mine next in the NW after a fairly bad experience last year.

Mileage is only 48000 so beware, Price was for a complete Vanos rebuild, inspection II, brake service and a new lambda sensor came in at £2400 with impeccable service and nothing is too much bother for James. Paintwork properly protected by covers, steering wheel protective cover. Honestly I can not fault at all. :D

Is it Imola Red? I was admiring it on Tuesday when I took #308 in for a brake check
Completely agree with you about Redish

Thanks, ours was on 49K when purchased but is as sweet as a nut. I have been worried about some of the stories with vanos issues etc. I am surprised at such a low mileage to be fair.

Our car is now on 55k but not being used at the moment. Luck of the draw, possibly..!!

Mine was on almost 150k, before the accident (now back on the road as a 2nd car) and has not had any of the common rear springs, O2 sensor, rod bearing, vanos issue...yet :fuelfire:

It did have a new engine under warranty in my first year of ownership though, at 23,000 miles, due to sticky valve (or one of the many other reasons the dealer gave over the 3 month investigation). It's also had a new diff at about 90,000, again under warranty. The only other things it has had are little things like wiper relays, parking sensors & front caliper - all under warranty.

Not had anything big & unexpected to pay out since I let the warranty expire at 100k, but I have replaced the tired suspension, and do annual inspection 2, 3 monthly/7000 mile oil changes, and brake fluid for every Ring trip.

My biggest consumables are petrol, pads & tyres.

Check out Hack engineering or Mr Vanos, or even just google s54 cam sprocket bolts you will find sections on the s54 and how they commonly find the cam sprocket bolts working loose and snapping. Apparently BMW changed the bolt type in later s54's but with an interference engine imagine the damage (and cost) in the event of sprocket failure.
Any unusual rattles need to be checked given the amount of engines that have suffered this issue I'd say. :D

The S54 engine is a "noisy" motor by nature, so it's difficult to discern what is normal what is "unusual". I had the "marble in a can" sound in certain rpms since 7K miles when I got the car. At ~44K, I had decided to do the all the Beisan Vanos stuffs as cautionary maintenance due to all these scary things I've read/seen on the internet :P So naturally, the cam sprocket bolts have to get swapped as well - the original bolts were perfectly fine - nothing is loose and nothing is sheered. Therefore, it wasn't the source of my noises. But the Beisan stuffs made all the differences - no more "marble in a can" at any rpms! It is so smooth and quiet now that it runs better than when I got the car 6 years ago :driving:
