Red tint third brake light?

My pre-FL E85 has a clear third brake light and I'd prefer red. Red genuine third brake lights are stupid money, if you can even get one, and the cheap ebay versions reputedly have poor fitment. So I thought of covering mine in red Lamin-x red film, using a universal piece and cutting it to size.

I've searched and not found any threads where people have tried this, only applying pre-cut sheets on other lights. Anyone remember it being tried before on the third brake light and able to warn me off before I buy and give it a go?

I have fitted a few eBay ones and they are not that bad a fit tbh.

Useful, thanks. Mind if I ask if you were always able to remove the originals without breaking them, so they could go back in if needed? I've been reading some posts of people breaking them trying get them out.

If it's purely a cosmetic change and your original is in good condition then it should come out ok................. unless the bolts are too tight in which case the heads can spin and the only option is destructive.

I replaced mine with a genuine BMW part and it fits no better than the eBay/Amazon ones.

If you have a working clear third brake light perhaps you could do a swap with [ref]Compaqnx[/ref] as they are after a clear 3rd brake light as seen in https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=151383
