when i started the zed today i got a blank red idrive screen for 20 seconds or so, then it went black. the radio was working OK except i couldnt see any information on the screen. no nav, ipod, nothing. doing the old IT trick of switching off and on didnt work. the only thing i did recently was fit a stubby aerial, but that worked OK for several days until today. replacing it with old aerial didnt make things any better.

i little while later on restarting everything worked OK.

anybody experienced this?

Internet search shows the red idrive screen issue described above by dr_john seems fairly common among all BMW models going back a while.

Today playing music from USB stick in the arm rest. Went to change album with Idrive joystick and the CD/Multimedia option showed no disc.Took USB stick out when arrived home, re-inserted and engine on all seemed OK.

Took car out later and the screen came up as usual but nothing other than a red screen. Fiddled with joystick and console buttons e.g. radio which played and screen went black but no visible sign of life. Clearly a video output issue.

Switched off and went shopping. Came back and re-inserted USB stick, engine on and all seemed to be back as it should be.

Un-nerving as I am likely to be going on extensive travels soon.

Many reports suggest it is an intermittent glitch. Fixes range from idrive reboot by holding down vol button for 25 secs, go shopping for a few minutes, hope it's not there next time you start up etc. etc. .

Poor video cable connection, loose or faulty battery cable, too hot, too cold, too moist, dead or dying unit ... have all been mooted as possible causes via internet search but with no real confirmation of likely cause.

Anyone on the forum had more serious issues with this glitch? I'm within warranty so no issues there but doubt dealership can or will do much while it currently seems OK but will see what they say. Don't want to be let down on travels with sat nav not visible so would really appreciate any info on this.

Many thanks.

Hmmm, as the original thread starter I have to say that this was a very temporary glitch and has not happened since. TBH, I'd forgotten about it until this thread resurfaced.

Therefore it does seem to be an intermittent problem.

Thanks for confirmation you have not had a recurrence.

It didn't do this at first but now mine has started displaying the BMW logo on red screen, then starting NAV before all is well. This was after ripping several CD's so wondernig if hard drive releated? Also wondering if due to phone being connected to USB. I'll try with and without the phone plugged in and see if it makes a difference.

^ I only got a blank red screen, no logo. Also, I have never bothered with the hard drive, I've always used an iPod for music plugged into the USB port in the armrest.

I'll report this when I take it in for first service (next January!) unless I get any probs in between.

Similar. Only ever used arm rest USB. Slightly worryingly that was working OK but going to change album the screen showed there was 'No disc' as the USB appears under DVD/Multimedia. Then when I tried later the red screen appeared and now has not re-appeared. The red screen suggests video issue whilst the disappearing USB suggests something else.

I will take it in for checking as I can't risk problems while abroad as with my navigation and map skills I could end up anywhere.
