Red meat: What is a 13% increase in the risk of death?

"On average, when he's sitting eating his extra burger, that person is losing half an hour of life because of that meal. On average, it's equivalent - scaled up over a lifetime - to smoking two cigarettes a day, which is about half an hour off your life.

"Or, it's equivalent to being a bit overweight - about 5kg overweight - which I am, so I'm losing, on average, every day, half an hour off my life expectancy."

But life is too short anyway.... I was thinking about beef burger and chips with a pint of cider for lunch tomorrow.

I do wonder why they do these stupid studies. Pay some people loads of money to tell us what 99% of the time we already know...

Rubbish. Chance of death is 100%, regardless of what you eat.

And one year in an 80 year lifespan is 1.3%, not 13%.

According to that, I'm probably living on borrowed time and I'm only 42, due to loving rare steak, burgers, BBQ sausages, veal, ostrich, venison, etc. plus the hundreds of Cohibas I've smoked, and the lakes of alcohol I've drunk.

Might as well carry on then

no sense in giving up now!

These stats annoy me - aside from being designed to grab headlines, they aren't correct.

Eating red meet will not have a 13% higher chance of death.
You do not have a 13% chance of death when you eat red meet.
A burger will not take x minutes off your life.

The ratios of 'x people eat x burgers and live to Y years' is not comparable to 'z people eat z burgers and live to Y years'.
They are not directly comparable because of all the other factors!

If they are trying to say that eating red meat results in (eg) higher cholesterol which can lead to heart attacks which can mean you may live less long, then fine. But they don't seem to be saying that...
