Red leather gear and handbreak gaiters - *UPDATED*

Yes you're right, my gaiter is ever so slightly lighter in colour than my seats. The dream red tint is extremely difficult to match.

You need to gently pull the old leather off, If I remember correctly, I inserted a very small flat screwdriver under the leather's edge, then wiggling it around the base ring. Used contact glue to mount the new one on, the thick liquid kind that's applied with the cap mounted brush. During curing, the leather piece was held in place by installing an elastic band around the plastic base, keeping it there for 24 hours.

Your seller should be able to supply you with a step-by-step, shouldn't he?

Thanks for the info, I now have an idea of what I should be doing to secure the new gaiter to the plastic ring

As the other guys have said, you will find it hard to get an exact match, whether it be dye or leather

When I had the (black) sports seats that I sourced releathered to match the existing cream interior I had some crazy quotes

To source the same BMW leather was going to cost upwards of £1200

In the end I went for the nearest match which was £720. The seats are now notidentical to the interior plastics, but I guess this is the trader off when you go for the cheaper price

Your interior looks fantastic Ranski and agree there has too be a trade off at some point. It is not however a million miles away though, and I have a saying which is "A blind man would be pleased to see that" :)

That looks like a nice wee cheap mod, I am tempted to change mine. Like you I wasn't sure if it is as easy to attach the new gaitors, but others think otherwise and having already done it I will bow to their superior knowledge. :)

:poke: Hope to see some before and after pics when its all done

I will be posting some pictures once they are fitted Brian :)

I'm in need of a new hand brake handle, but may go for black leather with red stitching, then get the hand brake gator and gear gator to match at those prices.

Oh dear, as I read back my own post a plan formed, I'm going to have to do this, then when I get my wheel re-trimmed get it black with red stitching! I hate this forum sometimes :headbang:

I should have realised that there is no such thing as just a cheap little mod, its got me thinking about red stiching on the wheel, mmmm sounding very nice. However I am getting my 224's refurbed with a new set of tyres fitted at the same time at end of January so I HAVE TO RESIST .... well until at least February

Yea I think this will be my February mod, my January one is LED angel eyes, December was spacers all round

Finally got the red leather gaiters fitted which I ordered from J F Boots.

The gear gaiter was a easy, however the hand break was quite awkward what with glueing and trimming the leather to get that perfect finish. Well very happy with the results. In the end I decided not to go with changing the hand break cover for the one with red stiching, thought it might be just a bit much.

Sorry about the quality of the photo.

Looks great!

I think I'll go for all three but have the black with red stitching on all, will get mine ordered the end of the month (jan)

The photo actually makes the colour difference look worse than it actually looks. I am going to get some dye from Liquid Leather which should take the colour down a wee shade or two :)

I did notice whilst I was stripping the gaiters was that the hand break cover has some padding stuck to the top side of the plastic mount. I was checking mine to see what would be needed if I decided to change it later at some point. The padding on m:ine came away as the old cover was slowly removed, at which point I stopped investigating futher. I don't think you could reuse the old padding so would need to find a substitute padding that could be used and secured in place. I guess that without any padding in place the cover might not be a snug, tight fit. :(

Looks a good finish, but as the others said not quite a match

PS be careful with the dye, if you dont apply it evenly it will look patchy

Got me thinking ! I have centre arm rest fitted don't know if just to fit the gear gaiter &' leave the hand break as most of it's covered with the armrest.

That looks great swiftly

Think I will be doing this when I get a chance...
