Red Bull RB7 RC Build - 300 bhp/ton!!

Evening Guys and Gals,

So round visiting my dad this afternoon we decided that we needed a project.

When I was much younger we'd always have some silly project on the go.

Car related projects were: A pedal go kart I had when I was ~10. We (well, pretty much my dad with me watching / "helping") cut out a wooden "Ferrari" shell for, painted it red, fixed it to the go kart to create my very own Ferrari. At 12, we built an RC Escort Cosworth and at 17 I purchased my first car (1.2 Clio), on which we spent a summer uprating the ICE system, fitting a spoiler and other miscellaneous items.

Anyway, since departing for uni we've not attempted any new projects, however we saw an advert during the F1 qualifying to build an RC version of Red Bull's RB7 and we started thinking.

A quick look at the website and an impulse subscription later and the decision was made.

It's a horribly flawed idea (the front wing will almost definitely suffer damage with little opportunity to procure spares) and is extremely expensive.

However, it's a nitro powered RC car putting out 1.8 bhp at the crank, which will weigh no more than 6kg (at a guess and some cursory searching), meaning an indicative figure of 300 bhp/ton  :driving:

Anyway, not being wealthy enough to start a real project of my own this will have to do

I'll update through the process of the build, although it's a 2 year process....expect this thread to die around 2 months into the process!

I saw that advertised on TV.

Looks like an awesome build. How easy will it be to "drive", and will it benefit from any aero stability?

Look forward to the build :)

So how much does it actually cost to build the car and how long will it take?

+1?

£800 and 2 years

Can't put a price or time limit on some quality father/ son bonding though (that's the line I'm sticking to  )

I honestly have no idea, I'm a complete noob with these things!

It will be the anticipation of the part each month or two weeks , I can see it will be good fun as a family project. You could buy it in a shop, spend a solid weekend of getting pissed off together and not enjoy it. Looks like a good model

do they tell you how much replacement parts are?? you will need a fair few front wings no doubt.

Wouldn't it be easier and.better to spend £800 on a beast rc kit.car which you can.buils together instead of getting ripped off by some magazine?

I imagine the engine will come in lots of pieces, how awesome that will be to put that together

Almost definitely, but we like F1, not RC cars specifically, so the attraction of building the RB7 is greater than any other RC.

You have to order the back order copy of the magazine I believe, the front wing is covered in the first 3 issues, at £8 per issue it's £24 per wing.

Might order a few spare.

It's 100 issues (4 per month over 25 months), so I'd imagine it all comes in lots of pieces  , but yeh the engine and general fiddling with the mechanics will be cool. Looking forward to the process more than the final result I think

its made by kyosho so parts are likely to be available or at least by order.

they have been about for a while by the looks of it so you should have a good chance of getting all the issues :) looks fun

Yeh, I believe the actual RC components will be Kyosho, whereas the shell and "modelling" aspects are De Agostini. These could be harder to come by, given that the kit is subscription only and not available for purchase. As such, any body spares (i.e shell, wings, wheels, tyres etc.) will need to be through the back order function.

I'll need to carefully assess which stock is likely to be required and create a little stockpile. Mainly front wings I'd imagine.

No doubt theres fill kits similiar around and for less but . Like the father son aspect.
Wish I Did more stuff with my old man

I wouldn't have the patience to wait across 2 years for magazines to turn up!

Funnily enough I was looking at RC cars yesterday, for £800 you could get two top notch kits, build them together and go racing next week.

Very true, but I am seriously impressed by the level of realism for the RB7 build. Most RC kits look OK, but not good and certainly not accurate. Being F1 fans, this is more about the RB7 itself, than just getting an RC car.

Maybe I'm just a marketing man's dream.

id be surprised if many of the major car components are de agostini as they aer just a part works publishing house, the kit looks reminiscent of some of the kyosho f1 cars they do so i would guess they commissioned the work from kyosho.. the main concern with these look to be the front shock mounts and the wing mounts. if its based on what they say it is then i would bet my bottom dollar that you'll be fine getting some of the bits like suspension components etc. my experence of cars like this is they share the same platform across many models. the shell is likely to be the most costly and difficult to replace, for what they are RC shells are mental expensive.

i would also expect the engine block to come ready built too. glow engines are not complicated to take apart just damn fiddly so its the kind of thing that is usually supplied ready done. just needing the clutch etc to be bolted on.

good luck with the build, it should be fun :) when you have done it expect to waste hours running the sodding thing in :) its worth it to do properly. from what i remember of mine it took 4 or 5 tanks of fuel before it was happy.
