Recondition MFSW Trim Covers Plastikote/Hydro dip

I have just bought some s/h MFSW switches etc from eBay





As you can see the trims need some refurbishing, original finish almost feels 'rubbery'.

Has anyone done this and if so what did you use etc please. Failing that sensible suggestions very welcome

Hi,

Did mine recently, the only right way to do it is to remove all the old finish, I used 240 grit wet and dry and a bucket of soapy water (you've got to keep the wet and dry and the MFSW part soaking or the rubbery stuff will clog the paper in seconds). Keep going until your back to white plastic, dry it, plastic primer, then either matt black (Marks a bit easy) or semi gloss black (Halfrauds rattle cans or similar) - obviously remove the switches before chucking them in the bucket :D .

Change of title applies has anyone any experience in using either Plastikote or Hydro dipping for something like the spoke covers, how well do either stand up to use, any ideas?

Hydro dip them in carbon fiber look :thumbsup:

+1 hydro dip is better for shaped objects as the film can mould to anything, i.e. no dodgy lines etc. I am about to do a lot of dipping, including centre console, hoops etc. finish will be perfect.
 
Ooo, sounds Interesting. Any links or explanation as to what it actually is? I've wrapped stuff in 3m film before but not heard of this..
 
Bing tried plastikote on his IIRC. Didn't last long though...

I've wet & dried mine back to plastic then coated with a few coats of satin black rattle can (hated the silver look they were originally). Still looking good a year later.

Once they are sanded smooth etc is there any chance that you could do the two little bits please

The covers can't look good though surely? If done properly, you would need carbon fibre replacements!

I personally couldn't live with covers. Would prefer either paint or dip to keep the wheel preportioned properly!

That was plastidip which is non permanent unlike plastikote I believe.

Im after them as well but these were a OCD no go for me, retro fit costs £171 which im getting july for BMWMINIPARTS

They look good as its real carbon fiber not e-bay looky likey wrap ( no offence to those with the wrap ) :roll:

Shame the "Covers" are only the fronts not the rears, and no lower cover available... it's going to look odd :lol:

No offence to whoever has these covers... :lol:
 
I used very fine wire wool to remove the old paint, then used plastic primer and satin black paint, I did this a year ago and they still look like new

I couldn't take knowing they were covers and not a proper solution.

Just personal choice!!
