Recommendations on dash cam video

Hello !

Might be a bit off-topic ? But my beloved E89 was smashed into today whilst in the car park. Idiot left no note but I have some dash-cam footage.

Unfortunately I can't seem to make the licence plate (let that be a lesson - buy a good dash cam) , footage is a bit dark and grainy. Does anyone have a tip or recommendation on how to make the video a bit clearer?

Many thanks!

Hi, really sorry to hear that your pride and joy has been damaged.

It might be worth trying a program such as adobe light room to play with the image and see if any details can be made out.

If you wanted to send me a screen shot, I am more than happy to try and improve the image for you.

Cheers

Paul

I use GIMP (it's free software as I'd rather spend my money on my Zed).

I had to try and bring an image up so I could read text and was told to try invertinging it (like a photographic negative) I don't know if it would help you, but if you want to send me a still, I'm happy to give it a go for you

Thanks a lot guys

Some screen grabs - car was there when I parked at 1 pm then the accident happened later at night (6ish)

I think it's LR69FVN, which matches the model of the car, however unsure if the car is black / dark blue ?

That index number is showing as belonging to a dark blue 7 series hybrid - according to check the car.

I can't get anything from those images though, sorry

Hi mate

I am afraid it’s a no go from me too. Just not enough information available from the images to be able to obtain a good clean up. Hope you manage to get to the bottom of the issue though.

Nextbase 522GW with rear view module. Make sure you wire it to a permanent live.
If you submit the video to police or your insurance company they will clean it up, if anyone on here messes with it then its instantly unusable as evidence because it has been tampered with.

Thanks so much everyone for your efforts ! I really appreciate it.

Thanks for the recommendation on the dash cam. Yes - I have submitted the video to the police / insurer's solicitors from the dash cam, hopefully they will be able to work out the plate, though I'm pretty sure I'm correct as the plate matches the car colour, make and age.

Looks correct... LR69 FVN - BMW - Blue
An eye-dropper scan across the car in Photoshop confirms the colour is blue not black.
From the night shot the 69 is just about extricable, but the rest is blown out by the lights.
Good luck tracking them down.

Thank you all.

It appears it was the correct reg. Original video sent to insurers who this morning informed me I will not pay any excess and I will not lose my NCB - chuffed.

First thing as soon as my car is repaired is to buy a high end dash cam. However, even this lower-end dash cam has paid for itself.

I've had success wiring a Viofo A129 dashcam for front and back. It either operates as 1080p 60FPS front only, or 1080p 30fps front and back. Doesn't cost the world and wasn't too difficult to fit myself (and disguise all the cables too).

I would recommend having a look at the DashCamTalk forum to see whats good in 2020 though, as I've had mine for a year and progress never stops.

Thanks for the recommendation !

I have the BMW supplied Advanced Eye 2 fitted in mine - Its a compact neat and tidy installation and the pictures look clear.
everything accessed from the mobile phone.

Its not a budget option but it seems to work and it integrates with the car as you should expect.

Thanks for that.

I'll definitely be looking for a higher end dash cam as soon as my Z4 is repaired. It's gone to BMW today so hopefully by next week
