Now I have York sorted...
Off for a week's holiday with my boys and my German cousin and partner on Saturday. Accommodation right by the harbour is sorted, but recommendations for family friendly places to eat, pubs with good (preferably local) beers for the boys, and general things to see and do would be good. Thanks :)

When I went I found things were stupidly busy early on but very quiet by 11 and everything closing. Rick Steins is always a good one but you have to book. We went to most of the places there over the week we stayed and found them all to be great all serving fresh sea food. Lobster and muscles were amazing!

Doom Bar will be the beer of choice. Lovely pint and very local to that area too.

Named after a bar outside the estuary!

Any of Rick Stein's places will not disappoint he has several in increasing price Range culminating in the Seafood restaurant on The Harbour ,look at his website

For something nice to do, get the passenger ferry across the estuary to Rock then go to the Blue Tomato cafe (or Resturant in the evening).

You can't miss it on the left hand side as you walk into rock from the ferry landing spots.

Incredible alpine style hot chocolate, nice views etc. food good too. Reasonably expensive so don't expect a total bargain but really very nice.

This next statement may kill or elevate its status - David Cameron tends to stay near Rock when he goes to cornwall and does frequent the Blue Tomato...

The speedboat tours from the harbour are good fun

If you want to get away from the crowds, head a little further south and go to Constantine Bay and/or Booby's Bay. Both lovely

stuart, i wouldnt mention speedboats and padstow at the moment, great memories of mussel collecting between surfs at boobys and constantine, long hot summer of 76. two week camp at treyarnon, 72 foot cliff jumps into the gulley, climbing the sea stack, diving under the water to the entrance of a huge hidden cave... ah the memories

york, lovely city, was up there on a move last year, stumbled across a stunning indian, best shaslick ever. mmmmmmm

Mother Ivey's Bay = you'll be enchanted forever (next to Constantine). For food I'd give Steins a miss and spend half hour heading south to Fifteen in Watergate Bay (recommend the taster menu with drinks).

Best Fish and Chips 3 miles up the road at Fryer Tucks just off the crossroads in St Merryn.

I used to stay at Mother Ivey's bay regularly. Work buggered it up this year. Those fish and chips are to die for

+1 for Fifteen at watergate bay - one of our special treats whenever we're down as its a very short coast path walk away from us.

Breakfast and lunch there are substantially cheaper than the dinner menu but every bit as special.

Pick the right day and the sunsets are like none you'll have seen before.

Don't forget to have a traditional steak pasty from Chough Bakery too - right on the harbour front in padstow. Best for miles around.

Hi,

As Tom said Padstow appears to be owned by Rick Stein (Locals call it Padstein), not a bad thing, but while your there take a trip up the coast to Rock, Tintagel and best of all Boscastle for a Pint (1/2 if driving :driving: ) and a proper pastie!

Stu.
