Help! Travelling to Brussels for a day trip in a couple of weeks time and just wondered if you well-travelled forumites had any recommendations on any sights that are a must and also restaurants. Would really appreciate your knowledge on the city. Have got a few ideas from google but thought I would ask you guys your thoughts too :)

Had a wander round Brussels last year, unfortunately it was part of a very long stag weekend so things are a bit blurry
Seem to remember a bar that had a massive selection of beers from around the world, which was very good :)

Regarding somewhere to eat, it really depends on your budget, but I can recommend some good ones (of all price ranges).
  • Lola's (French) - place du grand sablon
  • Comme Chez Soi (French) - place Rouppe (off Rue de Midi)
  • Le Manufacture (French) - Rue Notre Dame du Sommeil
  • Les Portes des Indes (Indian)
  • Les Larmes du Tigres (Thai) - near the Palais de Justice at the bottom of Avenue Louise/Place Stephanie
  • L'Elephant Bleu (Thai) - but of of town a few miles
  • Chez Patrick (traditional Belgian fare - good value) - just off Grand Place
Comme Chez Soi & Le Manufacture being at the expensive end of the market (£100/head range when I last ate there in 2008).

As for sightseeing, you've got the Atomium, Botanical Gardens, there's a few museums & art galleries, the Grand Place for drinks/eats (not forgetting to visit the Manneken Pis), Autoworld (if you like cars).

Lived on Avenue Louise a few years back, loved eating out in the Fish Market area, some excellent restaurants there
+1 to mmm-five's recommendations also. If you've kids with you, Six Flags Belgium (also called Walibi) just south of Brussels is worth a visit. Stay away from Rue de Brabant/Rue d’Aerschot area unless you like the red light districts :)

Thanks guys for all your recommendations and comments, will definitely bear these in mind in the planning of our trip (thanks for the heads up on the red light district - always worth knowing which areas to avoid)

BTW, if any of your group likes chocolate, then don't go to the 'branded' chocolatiers (Godiva, Neuhaus, ), go to the award winning chocolatier/pattissiere (Pierre Marcolini) under the Conrad Hotel on Avenue Louise/Place Stephanie or Place du Grand Sablon.

I used to bring home about £100 worth every weekend - and that was only for a couple of KG!
