Recommend me a Graphics Card

Update on this - purchased the MSI 960GTX Gaming 4GB card which certainly has improved things. I tried the 4k resolution through my YSP-2200 but no good although its possible that its down to old HDMI cables (standard unknown version and v1.3) Using the 1.3 cable directly from the gfx card to the tv, it was able to handle 4k although not perfectly, it was very clear.

I have ordered 2 new v2.0 cables to see if this helps at all.

RE gaming, its so much smoother now, although at 1080p medium settings there is still a little screen tear but its only about 1000% better than it was with the old card on the lowest res and settings!

RE video - tested a 1080p mp4 and was impressed how smooth again it was with no screen tear or jittering.

Very happy overall with the £135 purchase (new but opened box item) from ebay :-)
 
Screen tear = turn on vsync in the game settings.
Will cap your FPS to the monitor refresh rate, usually 60.
 
No worries, no point running FPS higher than screen refresh rate really as it just heats the card up for no reason :) I tend to run all my games as v-sync nowadays to keep the card cooler.
 
Thanks Disca, shows my lack of gaming knowledge..

It was a pain to get the card in, I had to take out and re-arrange all 4 HDDs & SSD, remove the ribbon cable for the Opitcal drive (and the audio cable), disconnect the rear USB card add on connectors and pilfer a 4 pin molex to 6 pin PCI-E power adaptor from my dads GFX card as I didnt have one!

I also had bought a caddy for my SSD which was just too long to sit behind the GTX so I had to snap the end off to get it all in.

Its been too long since I've gotten my hands dirty clearly
 
Yeah it happens my 970 uses an odd combination of cables also.
At least they are dirty again now and everything is still working!
 
my r9 290 plays almost everything new on ultra.

I usually play on high settings with my 4k monitor. 30-60fps

I have a ASUS ROG GENE VII
4790k
8GB 2400mhz ram
r9 290 with arctic cooling fan on it
4k samsung 28" monitor
400W psu (if that...been meaning to change it for 18 months now but its a super efficient and expensive one, even if its being pushed to it is limits)
