recomended garage for service 2

There is a link on my signature that supplies forum members recommendations based on individuals experiences. (I think it still works).

Even if they're using pattern parts (nothing wrong with that it they're open about it), it seems very cheap for an ///M I2.

Here's why I'm wary of prices that seem too cheap.

Parts (BMW prices in brackets):
  • 1 x Oil Filter kit with seals (£15)
    1 x Micro filter (£30)
    1 x Cam cover gasket (£60)
6 x Spark plug hole gaskets for cam cover (£50 for 6)
13 x Rubber seals for cam cover (£15 for 13)
    6 x Spark plugs (£110 for 6)
    1 x Air filter (£30)
    0-24 x shims (£2 each)

So a total of about £300 (£250 with trade discount, £150 if not using genuine), plus the oils (£60 for engine, £80 for gearbox, £40 for diff) - which is about £300 for parts/fluids, and then you've got to factor in the 5 hours labour (BMW book time). So they'd have to be charging about £30/hour incl. VAT just to break even.

So they're getting the parts very cheaply, are reusing gaskets/seals, or just not doing the whole job.

I've used auto-technik, just off junction 20 of the M1, for the last inspection 1 and subsequent oil service. Might be a bit far from you but they seemed very good.

Mark Percell in Oxford is supposed to be very good. Big of a drive but Oxford is a nice place to walk around while you wait?

Totally agree 400 seems cheap for what's being done, I have had two quotes for this amount and both said nothing about valve clearance until I asked if it was done, not getting a warm feeling
Found these guys just down the road so I will call in tomorrow and have a chat
They seem to have a good reputation

spoke to Deutsch Tech in MK they confirmed all parts on your list, said shims are extra and charged as needed, also said he needed the car for two days as it had to be stone cold to set the valve clearance so they are making all the right noises
have booked it in £450

Does sound good

Don't forget to give us an update on the whole experience once it's been done.

I had my last oil service on the Z done by them, I provided my own oil to bring the cost down (price agreed in advance), I got the impression they did a good job and cared for the car.

Also, I've had a couple of services on my 1 series done there.

TBH I dislike garages and it takes a lot to for me to trust a garage as I've had far too many bad experiences in the past.

This is the reason I used to do all my own servicing!

I have an Insp2 due on the Z in a couple of thousand miles will probably take it there.

There is another BMW specialist in Stevenage - Barry Jones Autocentre - a friend recommends them. A1's more convenient to work though!!

Picked the car up today
Inspection 2 done brake fluid change and 2 new shims needed for the valve clearance, all done for £530
They even attached a photo of the car with cam cover removed to prove it was done
What else can I say other than I would use again.

Thats great thanks. My folks are up in MK and have used Deutsche Tech servicing their E90 330i.

I'll give them ago when my Insp 2 is due, next year.
