Recirculate Air Button

Is it just me or was it a strange decision by the designers to put a recirculate air button on the steering wheel of the e89?

I don't think I've ever needed to use that button in any car I've owned, and have certainly never wished I had it available on the steering wheel.

Would much preferred to have the sport mode button on the wheel - now that would save a bit of effort.

Did all e89's have this button on the steering wheel? Wondering if it was only for certain markets, perhaps ones who's cities have bad air quality (mine was built for the Japan market).

As far as I can see it was certainly standard on North American and UK markets..

It would have been nice to be able to re-assign the buttons..a bit like the soft keys on the radio

As not owning a e89 I can't answer specific question. But in my 05 zed and my other cars is use the recirculate option when first put on Air Con as it helps to cool inside car faster. Then pulling in outside air to cool car. Find it also helps in defrosting car at times. But agree button on steering wheel doesn't make sense.

For sure that would have been great. I really like the way you can reassign the keys on the radio. I have the Mode button assigned to close the idrive screen and use it every time I drive the car, much prefer not having the distraction of the screen.

In very hot climates, the circ is God sent. I’ve lived in Mexico one summer. Circ please!

On the steering is silly indeed. I also find it silly the aircon comes on automatically, even if it was off when you last ran the car.

BMW lost their way a bit in the last 20 years.

Never even noticed it on mine..

I only noticed it today.... after seeing this post! Usually only ever use the volume buttons, on rare occasions the track change buttons.

Is it me? Often, whilst trying to lower the volume, I end up dialling the last dialled number. Am I fat fingering something?

Never ever used that button on steering wheel. I always have it on auto anyway!
Answer call button on the other hand…….

Well that explains it, I always thought it was a fault caused by Bluetooth system

Anyone with the early steering wheel with the silver trim, check it. On my car it's started to lift. Seems just glued on.

Mine is starting to lift in one area. Not really an issue at the moment but if it gets worse I may need to source a new wheel as it doesn't look like it can be easily rectified.

On the subject of buttons I have to say that the extra window open/close button that does all 4 windows is brilliant.

Seems a little unnecessary but I do love having it.

When I first read this I thought "don't be stupid, there's no button for air recirc". Then I went and checked and feck me you are right..Must be to do with the Germans targeting the California market.

Again never noticed that either. "Global closing and opening" how very posh.

After spending many minutes visiting the garage to check..... did you know if you press the start button 6 times without starting the engine, the inside pair of headlights light up on dipped beam? Well I never :D

Every day is a school day!
Ive had a a couple of E89s over the years and never notice the re circulate button on the steering wheel.

I probably will never ever use it either.

did you know

No I didn't know that. I don't really know much about what goes on with my headlights as I cant see them from the drivers seat, I just leave them on auto. I do know tho that I've got one white angel eye and one yellow one. Something I've been meaning to sort out but cant find H8 bulbs in my neck of the woods.

Recirculate is supposed to detect dodgy smells and operate, wonder how that works. Is it just passing or by passing the charcoal filter?
The auto A and manual, anyone ever noticed a difference.

There is an air quality sensor in the engine bay under the scuttle deck, that sends a signal to the heating / cooling ECU which commands recirculating mode if the mode button is on auto.

The steers wheel button manually overrides that system.
