Receiving texts via BMW Nav/ bluetooth combo

Hopefully somebody has an answer to this question for me.

I have an E89 35i and a F11 525. Both are fitted with the high end navigation system. I have an iPhone 4S and my wife has a windows phone.

The windows phone when it receives an incoming text give the opportunity to have the message read out and the ability to answer the test by using speech. The iPhone does no of this!

Am i missing something or a setting, and is a Windows phone more capable than an iPhone?

I want this feature as i'm always being texted by family members when driving.
 
iPhone does not support this. No way around it as yet. Protocol required is not within the iPhone but is in many other phones. Use the online phone compatability tool on the BMW website to check what each phone brings in terms of support.

iPhone (while I have one) is not the dogs...

Yep i can see that the iphone is inferior in this department!
 
It does (I have an iPhone 4, and the other half a 5, both work) it can read out texts i receive while driving - it comes up in messages etc...

This has worked since ios 6 when apple added Bluetooth MAP support

Edit: just to be clear it can display/read out the contents of an incoming text, not respond via my speaking - although I've not tried with the 5 :)
 
Ah, i didn't know they'd added support at the last update... irrelevant to me anyhow as my car is pre combox...

What's that?

I ask as I am due an update on my mobile and want to try and get the right phone this time! :D
 
Combox was a comms hardware update, end of 2010 models I think. It offers more functionality like texts, iPod artwork, Bluetooth audio. I don't have that as I have the idrive from 2009.
 
Maybe a dumb question but how would I know if my car has it -build date was sept 2010 - I cant get it to read texts from my galaxy!
