Rear window broken by golf ball

I need the rear window of my 2005 z4 replaced. The body shop is telling me I have to replace the entire top, is this correct? I am wondering if anyone has just replaced the window. Thanks in advance for any replies.

I think this does sound right. I remember hearing before that the entire roof needs to be replaced if the window needs replaced. I don't think this is true for the E89 however.

The roof cover is not that expensive actually, only a few hundred. I was surprised at that.

To the best of my knowledge that is correct... But as PVR said, completely its only about $500 for the cloth with window... I'd try to put it on yourself.

I was quoted $2000 for the top and 13 hours labor for a total of $3600 dollars by my BMW dealer. I have insurance with a $500 deductable and full glass coverage. It sounds like my insurance company is going to claim this is a compressive issue and make me pay the $500 deductable. If it was covered under glass it would be free to me. I think I could argue strongly that it should be covered under my glass coverage.

Interesting point, I wonder if it would be covered under our glass coverage in the UK?

I doubt it though :(

That sounds like a motor replacement as well. It should only be the cover that needs replacing, not the entire mechanism.

My friend was driving past a golf course in his new C200 Mercedes and had a golf ball hit him. Didn't smash any glass but dinted the bonnet and broke the plastic blower air intake. He approached the golf course arguing that they should have fencing/nets up to prevent this. They paid the bulk of the repair bill without the slightest hesitation...

Golf courses have insurance just for this type of event. Proving damage occurred due to their business maybe difficult though if time has elapsed. You should always log the damage there and then.

The bulk of it?-i would have demanded they pay all of it plus!

He didn't expect to get anything from them without a lot of headaches, so took what he could get. Like Spareone3 said, proving something like this can be a pain. The balance was far less than his insurance excess.
